Oscilloscope bargain, or not?
« on: March 26, 2015, 01:01:42 pm »
This just came up on a local saved search here in Dubai. Any good?

http://dubai.dubizzle.com/classified/electronics/other/2015/3/26/brand-new-digital-storage-oscilloscope-for-2/?utm_source=details&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=Email+Alerts

Bear in mind, there's not a lot of (read: pretty much never) second hand gear showing up.

It's home would be on a second audio repair bench.

950AED = 250USD

Eh, it's not secondhand, it's new according to the advert. Despite this, they come without a warranty. Better off spending your cash on a similarly classed scope with a warranty.

Such as? I can't buy any scope for 250USD in Dubai.

I don't really need it. Just as they never come up, wanted to know if it was worth it, as like I said, a new 250USD scope doesn't exist in my part of the world.

I didn't realise the Dubai market for scopes is that limited. I assume shipping a basic Rigol/Hantek/Uni-T or whatever would cost a fortune?

Yep. As we have no postal service here (actually we don't even have street numbers), everything must be shipped by DHL. They call you when it lands to arrange collection. Also shipping it in kind of voids the earlier warranty point.

I bought a DS1054z here for 550USD through the local distributor. Had to pay, as I needed a scope on the bench.

Wow, so I see. I just browsed about here: http://www.anaum.ae/digital-oscilloscopes-s/1904.htm
That's quite a premium you have to pay there.

Regarding the Atten. There are a few reviews online about it, but nothing as detailed as Dave does.

As they say, if you don't need it then it's not a bargain.

The Atten.eu site has the 60MHz version at €260, which is roughly $290, so it's a saving of $40. I'd want more off for no warranty.

Even if you have to spend several hundred more it's better than spending bad money, if you know what I mean.

A little confused by your question here.

Whether the DSO is worth $250 or not is easily checked by looking at what is available in your area. It sells at a premium as there is little, if any, choice in the UAE. You have stated as much.

Are ATTEN DSO's any good ? IMHO, Yes. I own a couple and the build qiulaity is good. You have to take a close look at specifications though as some are marked up as 60MHz  or 100MHz bandwidth, yet only have adequate sampling rates for much lower frequency 'one shot' non repetative signals. Divide the sampling rate by 10 as a good guide to true real time capability.

IIRC $250 is not much money in the UAE so to answer your question....yes $250 is a fair price in your scenario. I paid GBP100 ($150) for my new Atten 60MHz DSO's but, like your units, they came without warranty.

If you think you can justify the cost to yourself, buy one. BUT check the specs as there is little point in buying a 100MHz bandwidth DSO that has the SAME low sampling rate as a 60MHz version  ;)

Hey Ho  :)

I guess you have bought the RIGOL from anaum in Abu Dhabi!?
They are some times a little pricy  8)

The Atten scopes are AFAIK made by Siglent. There for you can have a closer look here in the forum for reviews.
My wild guess: Siglent SDS1000CM series.

As the carton Box looks like an unwanted contact with a truck, maybe you consider spending little more money to get the Siglent from anaum?

All the Best
