I saw a Teledyne LeCroy WaveAce 234 on an auction platform.
The starting price is quite low.
Unfortunately, I have not found any information about this specific model on this forum.
WaveAce is generally described rather as "crap", from what I've seen.
Of course, it is not a very modern scope, with for example 320 x 240 px screen resolution.
On the other hand, it does have impressive specifications:
4-channel, 300MHz bandwith, 2 GS/s sampling rate, rise time 1.2ns etc.
My question: How "crap" is it really and how much should one pay for it at most today?

Looks like early 5" display SDS1000CFL, not L = 7" display.

Tiny mem depth = limited usefulness.

Hi,
A regional salesman from lecroy told us once, that offering the WaveAce models was one of their biggest failure they ever made. ;)

I concur with Martin, as much use as a chocolate fireguard best left for a starting point Rigol or Siglent imho

Thank you all!
Tiny mem depth = limited usefulness.
Memory Length: 10 kpts/Ch
Maximum Memory (Interleaved): 20 kpts
It's clear that this is not a top of the line device by today's standards, but everything has a price (which?).
At the moment the auction price is lower than a ZEEWEII DSO1511G costs. ;)

Oh that cheap. ;D
Nowhere can you get real 300 MHz BW and 2 GSa/s for that price.

Yes, that cheap. :-+
Maybe the included probes are worth the price alone.
Of course, the price will go up towards the end of the auction.
So I wonder how high I should bid for it.

Well it is 4ch if that matters and with Ext trigger input, something that is often dispensed with and made to use 1 ch for an Ext trig input.
Current best bang for buck 350 Mhz 2 GSa/s but only 2ch is SDS2352X-E of which the $619 200 MHz version can be convinced to be the same model. ;)

Thanks for the answers.
I also think that you have to look at it differently.
It may not have been great back then for the original price, but that doesn't mean it has to be a bad buy today for $50 - $150. I'll see.
After all, it's not a boat anchor. ;)
-
I have asked the seller again.
The unit comes with 4 LeCroy PP016 300MHz probes.
These alone cost at least $150 each (new)!
I have no idea how much to bid anymore.
Intuitively, I didn't want to go over 200 CHF.
The oscilloscope once had great specs, but memory and screen resolution etc. are really out of date.
The highest bid is now already at 190 CHF.
I think I'll let it go and save up for a Rigol DHO800. 8)

Why not, but LeCroy continues on selling rebranded Siglent instruments till today.

Some are mady by Siglent, some made by GW Instek probably.

You can find similar probes for much less.
My personal rule is not to buy used general purpose probes as nobody gives their good probes away. I treat used probes as someone else's underwear; throw them away. I'm not going to wear that as I don't know what has happened to it!

I know this.
They'd stopped the (cheap) rebranding thing before cooperating with siglent later on.
We've talked about a couple of years ago, by the visit of the (now retired) salesman, he showed us the brandnew Lecroy WS3000 ( without Z)..... ;)

No. The Waveace and WS3000 are Siglent scopes. Just with dreadfull buggy firmware. Back then I bought the first function generator made by Siglent. I ran Lecroy's firmware on it because that had all the functions that didn't work or caused problems cut out. Nowadays you can buy a function generator from Feeltech or Uni-T that works better.

Thank you, but I am not going to buy this device.
It is now already at CHF 300.- and the auction continues for several days.
For this price, it is too outdated for me and I do not necessarily need 300MHz bandwidth.
On the other hand, the probes look really good (https://img.ricardostatic.ch/images/712efebe-5002-4519-9815-dedcfca6d7ba/t_1800x1350/teledyne-lecroy-waveace-234-4-kanal-digital-oszilloskop) and are still in individual original packaging.

1x/10x... :P

Yeah, for the price of these 4 probes you get a pretty decent oscilloscope.
At least if you buy the probes at Conrad (https://www.conrad.de/de/p/teledyne-lecroy-pp016-tastkopf-10-mhz-300-mhz-1-1-10-1-600-v-102291.html?refresh=true) ;)

Hmm, the same photos as on the Swiss site.
There, however, they are already over CHF 500.
