Title: LeCroy's new "Test Tools" series of test instruments
Post by: Mr Nutts on November 06, 2018, 01:33:05 pm
LeCroy appears to have started a new test instrument series called “Test Tools”. Looks like these are, again, Siglent instruments but now without the black case.

Scopes seem to be Siglent SDS1000X (T3DSO1000) and SDS2000X (T3DSO2000):

Spectrum analyzer (T3SA) seems to be SSA3000X or SVA1000X:

There are also

Arbs (T3AFG):

Power supplies (T3PS):

DMMs (T3DMM):

I liked the black case of earlier Siglent Lecroy rebrands much better ;)

I don't even know why they bother. It is not like Siglent has some secret know-how that LeCroy doesn't.

It was the case with other stuff like probes when both LeCroy and KS rebranded Preamble stuff because Preamble were the experts. That's why everyone except Tektronix rebadges Hioki current probes.

They should focus on their own gear IMHO.

Lecroy has a very long history of rebranding equipment to supplement their portfolio. They probably do that to offer a one-stop-shopping solution so the sales people from Keysight, Tektronix or R&S don't get their feet between the door. However none of these manufacturers rebrand so much as Lecroy. AFAIK the only equipment Lecroy designs themselves are the high-end oscilloscopes.

The premium is probably worth it to get some decent support. I don't think Lecroy will send a DIY package with capacitors to their customers. Then again at Lecroy's prices you can buy a real piece of A-brand equipment.

do you mean buying a T3AFG40 at Euro 1022 + VAT instead of a SDG2042X at Euro 475 + VAT is worth because of the possible better support?

Yeah, i could justify this only if they came with Lecroy's firmware.

The WaveAce and the WaveStation (siglent HW) came with LeCroy FW ... then when somebody posted how to hack the Siglent units with the LeCroy FW lot of noise happened and LeCroy lost almost immediately that market. Maybe this time is different

If the HW is the same and Siglent's is completely hacked, "this time is different" can only happen with a Lecroy customized FW.

When anyone decides to have a different sticker, we should be able have a look at it.

LeCroy guys think that the customer is a fool who has never known about Siglent.  :palm:

I don't believe that this is correct. A very knowledgeable source  ;) told me that Lecroy didn't have its own firmware for the instruments that were made by Siglent, with the exception of the Wavesurfer 3000 (but that was a co-development). Siglent merely customized the firmware with Lecroy logo and different color schemes for use un Siglent Lecroy Instruments.

Lecroy also did not lose a market because of firmware, it simply had poor sales of its Siglent made instruments because they added some 150% or so on top of the retail price of the original Siglent instrument. It was an open secret where these devices came from, and those that wanted it just got the much cheaper Siglent original.

Never had anything from Siglent but I do own a Rigol DS1054z, and just the thought of Lecroy selling that under its own label with 200% markup is slightly embarrassing. I like the DS1054z because it's cheap, but paying something like $900 just because it carries a Lecroy sticker? No fucking way!

I agree with that based on my FW analyses but didn't want to be so radical. In order to pimp extra money the only reasonable explanation would be a new FW that the majority would acknowledge as "almost bug free" (quotation marks to calm the hardcore ones).

Almost correct ^

When in fact LeCroy did at one time have more advanced firmware than in some Siglent models.

Maybe it was just a sale date issue, Siglent units being older and with previous firmware and LeCroy selling later build (and firmware) units.
It was common when I joined this forum for owners of some Siglent equipment to flash with LeCroy firmware.
Some hunts back to '11, 12 and 13 should find threads where this is discussed.

That is right. When I bought my Siglent SDG1010 the Siglent firmware was really bad while the Lecroy branded firmware sort of worked so I used that for a couple of years.
