Title: LOL at my scope probe holder
Post by: AlfBaz on July 29, 2014, 10:37:53 am
Was in at the local hardware store the other day when I saw this cheap rectangular tubing. It was real shinny so my mind started ticking... what can I use this for?

Picked up a bit of threaded rod, some nyloc nuts and some rubber feet and there you have it.
To hold the probe I was envisaging elaborate slotted holes with plastic bushes... when the missus said what about a peg? Works a charm :)

Really good idea!
I'm using a simple wooden peg in similar way to fix smt parts for soldering. :-)

Where do you find these swan neck parts?
Ups, I see, its "threaded rod" didn't know this English word.

Hhm, maybe I slaughter an small cheap tripod?

This just gets better
Need to probe some differential points close together? Not a problem, turn the peg 45 degrees  ;D

Nice idea! Thanks; definitely going to make something similar for myself.
Hmm... perhaps with suction caps for feet. And a body/legs that can fold up when not in use. Also a... no, that's getting too complicated.

Otoh, going simpler, I wonder why this (see pic) never occurred to me either? I often use pliers with a rubber band to hold things. Just never thought of holding a scope probe that way.

Maybe, maybe not. If I had a decent workshop I'd certainly go more elaborate simply becaause I enjoy making stuff. Unfortunately hanging off the edge of the veranda hacksawing metal tube isn't very inspiring :)

Yeah that reminds me of Robrenz's post, a simple sprung loaded clamp with a drill run through it for a snug fit on the probe

I've generally resorted to using these fellows: http://www.pjtool.com/images/products/detail/1154.2.jpg (http://www.pjtool.com/images/products/detail/1154.2.jpg)
They come in a variety of sizes and are really useful for holding just about anything.

Hah love the pliers one.

I kept using one of those third hand soldering holders to hold probes and it didn't work terribly well, I need to put together something similar to the original post, likely a bit more light weight tho. Thanks for the idea

This deserves a Kickstarter campaign.

Use different coloured pegs for multiple probes ?   :)

I like you idea very much.
Its Occhams rasor at its best.

Put in an LED for lighting up the working area.

oh yes, and use a graphene capacitor to power it for day's. ;)

That's what I wanted. If you pierce any surface lacquer to get a good connection you sometimes need to continue to apply pressure for a good connection. To that end I also bough some solid steel rod to insert into the tube but it seems the steel tube is heavy enough on its own

This thing just keeps giving ;)

This deserves a Kickstarter campaign.
Heavy Freakin Holders!  ;)

A probe holder in the form of a little Alien guy with a big grin, would definitely make a mint.

Prepare to be probed!
All your test points are belong to us!

(I know, mixed memes.)

Great idea!  I'm going to copy your idea, but I'll also insulate the tubing to protect my projects from me...
