Teardown : HP 54006A: 6 GHz passive probe
« on: October 19, 2014, 07:09:20 pm »
HP54006 high frequency probe. Picked for 10$ at the de-anza fleamarket. Seller didnt know much about it since he claimed only the cable and accesories were there but no probe. (free_electron puts pinky in mouth ala dr-evil and goes 'riiiiight' ...)

Both , yes BOTH probes are in fact there. they just don't look like what you'd expect !

Came even in the original box.

contents : SMA kabel , SMA-BNC adapter, DC blocking cap , Two probe tips (1:10 en 1:20) and spare probe tip resistors)

The blocking cap does  26 GHz ... That thing alone cost a fortune. almost 1000$ new ...

the probes are essentially a small SMA connector that goes to two pins one is ground the other the attenuator tip. the attenuator tip is nothing else but the wire from a caddock resistor with gold plating on it. Depending on the attenuation the resistor is either 450 ohm or 950 ohm. the 50 ohm termination th eprobe needs is made inside the scope.

The resistors are made by Caddock

To swap one simply unscrew the protective barrel and pop it out. they slide in.
the specific series is sold by caddock but the resistance values here are not in the standard list. those are Agilent only ..

This probe is still being sold at close to 3000 dollar .. at 10$ ... i'll take that !

Good find Vincent. Glad to see you are still getting stuff there at prices that make a fire sale look expensive.

It is finds like that which make flea markets so much fun  :)

Last time I went ( beginning of month) there was mostly junk ( well, that would be a good improvement on some of it, which would have been better described as "missed the landfill collection") but I did pick up a lamp ( and a 2p coin stuck onto it) just for the base, a spirit level and 30 leather belt tool holders. Sold 12 of the tool holders there so got half my money back in minutes. total cost was $10 for the lot.
