Matrix MPS-3033X 3-channel 198W Isolated PSU - $299!?
« on: November 28, 2022, 07:46:04 pm »
In my recent quest to research the current programmable linear power supply offerings of the holiday season, I ran into this...

https://www.amazon.com/Programmable-MPS-3033X-Adjustable-regulated-Resolution/dp/B08W28FF9D

Retailing on Amazon for $399 (currently has a 25% off coupon code for ~$100 off = $299!) is a Matrix brand programmable PSU. Its clearly a knockoff BK Precision with specs that align to the 9130b model. It has three fully isolated channels (x2 0-30V@3A, x1 0-6V@3A), 1mv/1mA resolution, serial/parallel/track modes, sense inputs in the back as well as RS-232 and USB, etc. Its got a single rating for 2-stars with no explanation.

Oh, did I mention its $299 with coupon code!? LOL

MPS-3033X Spec Sheet: https://emin.vn/web/content/897339?access_token=ed01dc97-a8e5-44aa-b1ed-b02eaba2a1bd&unique=8879923d774706e8c5852c637f76f6f33e30c322

There are other Matrix PSU's on amazon with decent reviews, but I cannot find anything on this model outside vendors selling it with the same limited info. For the price (and free returns) I decided to give it a go and rolled the dice.

Anyone have any experience with this model or one similar??

I don't think that is an isolated supply.  I can find no mention of it in the specs, but I might have missed something.

The video (linked below) states that the three channels are isolated (as fyl2022 mentions) and the spec sheet has "series and parallel configuration data, but you are right that this is not specifically mentioned. I had this question too.
Video in Amazon listing:

I also found this video which seems to be made from Matrix that talks about a similar model. It doesn't seem very well edited as the guy repeats himself a lot (as if he was doing several takes and they forgot to edit out the ones they didn't want? ... lol), but it does help fill in some gaps.

Unfortunately the coupon code seems to have disappeared -- it was there last night but it's not showing up for me now.

This looks to be a good option for somebody looking for a cheap lab PSU. Unlike Siglent's counterpart, it has a keypad, unlike Rigol's counterpart, it has isolated outputs. The readback accuracy isn't stellar though.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

Is the Rigol a switching supply?

When I load the page, it now shows a 20% discount available (coupon code R7AM92ZF) and free 2-day Prime shipping.

1mV/1mA is pretty standard as advanced features in other supplies in this price range.

Nope - Linear as well.  :-+

That is the programming resolution. Readback accuracy is +/- 10mV / +/- 10mA so not stellar.

I received the Matrix MPS-3033X today. Taking after Dave, I didn't turn it on - instead, I took it apart! Well, somewhat.

PICS ATTACHED!

I have only been able to do some basic stuff, but here is what I found so far.

Pros:
  • PWA's look like quality builds.
  • Toroidal transformer has nice thick isolation.
  • All wires are bundled and the ones near the case edges are in a protective sleeve
  • The fans only spin up when needed. So far, I only briefly tested a short circuit condition on one of the the outputs and the noise was minimal.
  • Accuracy is pretty good. CH1 was +3mV from the set voltage, CH2 was +1.5mV, and CH3 was bang on. Used 4V to test and will try with other voltages.
  • Dial is also a push button that makes using it a bit simpler.
  • So far, near identical software operation as a BK Precision.

Cons:
  • From what I can tell, the large caps are YMIN brand? Never heard of them, but they are rated for 105C.
  • Loud relays.
  • Initial output enable ramp after power on looks pretty janky. Subsequent output enables looks cleaner, but still a small non-monotonic section. (supply set to 32V 3.2A connected to scope only). Can anyone comment on what this should look like? My BK Precision 9031B is cleaner, but also has a step ~2V so maybe this is a characteristic that is expected to some degree?
  • Banana posts not standard spacing. Used 0.85" instead of 0.75" (really!? ...)

I know it isnt much of a checkout yet. Ill get a programmable load to really stress it out. Please let me know what testing and output I should do and capture! I know that Dave like the constant resistance 1Ω stress test. >:D

This is as to be expected, since the BK Precision is just a rebrand of the same OEM model (itech IT6300: https://www.itechate.com/en/product/dc-power-supply/IT6300.html IIRC)
