military blackface HP 8640B - OPT 323 specs?
« on: June 06, 2023, 11:17:20 pm »
After some time looking for HP 8640B I found a military variant that could serve me well. I'm about to pull the trigger. However I heard it about having some limitations wrt the civil version. I can't find any manual; know that there's available at Artek for cheap but it somehow annoys me having to purchase the manual just to see if I have a sure shot or should look elsewere.

Is somebody here that could say what the differences are military vs civilian HP 8640? Having a capture of the specifications would be even better.

I own the military version. The main differences I recall is no external frequency counting capability and no frequency lock capability. Other than that, it has the same amplitude and frequency modulation functions, same frequency ranges (may or may not include the frequency doubler option to extend the range up to 1 GHz).

I believe it has the same phase noise spec. I recall I measured mine when I got it and it was within the civilian phase noise specifications.

Both the civilian and military versions do have different options, so your mileage may vary.

The military version does have the distinct advantage of being colored bright yellow, so you'll never miss it in the dark.

Thank you very much. I ordered it.

BTW, I finally found some site, plenty of information about HP8640, including a .txt file with military-civilian version differences, repair tricks, manuals for the civilian versions, etc. I think it's worth to put the link here:
