How to output first LO from HP8594E
« on: January 30, 2020, 02:39:08 am »
Hi,
I have an HP8594E without tracking generator or first LO output, and I would like to add an external TG. I wonder what's the best way to get the first LO out of the SA. I've attached a screen shot of the 8594E RF section and an edited picture with what I think would be something that, most likely, doesn't require a calibration. Can you think of something better? I bet you can...

Perhaps the 8562E or 8563E documents can help since they do have outputs ??

But for a quick and dirty TG, sweeping a synthesizer at the same speed as the SA sweep can be done in a pinch.  Be sure the SA RBW is wide enough to capture any frequency tracking error between SA and synthesizer with this crude method.

Thanks EE-digger,

Yes, the best way is to use the LO distribution amplifier, I have the 8490 series service manual. The problem with that is the price and that I need the driver board that happens to be the same driver board used for the original tracking generator. I was thinking of a more simple solution.

I could use the external trigger input to synchronise them but I'm not sure if they stay in sync. Maybe use the 300MHz cal output, divided by 20  for the sweeper clock. I'll give it a thought.
