Australian DMM multimeter recommendations
« on: March 17, 2020, 12:21:24 pm »
Yes another multimeter thread.

I just spent hours looking over the DMM spreadsheet, unfortunately many of the meters are not available in Australia or only second hand.

I'm specifically looking for a more accurate meter with 20000 count (or more) for the lowest price possible. I'm not too fussed about input protection as I can always use other meters for 240VAC requirements.

What is good on the Australian market right now?  What meters don't I know about?

$78 AUD.  Tenma 72-600  4.5 digit  20000.  Could be my winner manual range only

$90 AUD Uni-T UT61E 22000 count. Well documented on this forum for better or worse. Good value for the high count, probably a chinese version with no input protection movs.  Could be suitable for my requirements?

$290 AUD EEV 121GW  50000 count.  I know I want it, but over my budget this has to be the cheapest meter available with such features and specs.

$35 AUD  Digitech QM1321.  Budget option when 2-3 meters are needed?

Help me avoid a lemon and tell me any meters I don't know about.

Any reason you can't order an Aneng 870 from AliExpress?

I picked up an Aneng 870 from Bangood. Seems like a really good bang for your buck.

Here's  review of it that was very helpful. The main takeaways are:
    • Meter measured within specified tolerances except near 20A
    • CAT rating is fake

https://lygte-info.dk/review/DMMAnengAN870%20UK.html

Make sure to order a set of fuses to go along with the meter if you decide to get one. It seems 6 X 30 200 mA fuses are not so standard.

Nope. Brymen makes a couple of excellent 500,000 count meters for under $200 US.

eg. This one: https://brymen.eu/shop/bm867s/

Or this one (which I own): https://brymen.eu/shop/bm857s/

(Real CAT ratings, too!)

Welectron will ship one to Australia: https://www.welectron.com/

nb. 500,000 count is only for voltage, everything else is 50,000 count.

The Brymen range is pretty good, I think your best bet is to get one sent from overseas to Aus. The 235 or 257 are good portable ones as they are quite small, but IME the accuracy could be better for bench lab work. The 82x 83x or 86x series are larger, more accurate and good for sitting on a bench. I have the 829s and 869s.

Although Brymen makes excellent meters (I have a BM857 as well), keep in mind the high count mode does not increase accuracy but resolution instead.

In the BM857 I have, the high count mode (500.000 counts for VDC and 600.000 counts for Hz) has about 40 digits of error IIRC. It is great to evaluate trends (battery charge/discharge, for example).

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...

You might be able to fix that by adjusting your aircon.  :-+

Thanks for the replies, I knew I was asking in the right place.  Looks like the Aneng 870 could do it for me and then something Brymen when I'm more cashed up.

That's my plan. I'm looking at the BM 235 and and BM 257.
