MSO5074 for HDMI capture?
« on: March 29, 2023, 05:51:53 am »
Hi,
I just had the horrible experience of trying to capture video from a DS1054Z for my YT channel.

I have pretty much decided to get an MSO5074 for several reasons.
Has anyone here ever tried to capture the HDMI video from it?
I thought I'd use a BlueAVS HDMI to USB Video Capture Card from amazon to get video on the PC.

It seems like a really good solution.
The only problem is that I can't find any info about how well this actually works irl.
Has anyone here ever tried this and knows if it's lag-free?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

Have you considered a scope with inbuilt webserver for video capture right in the PC and mouse or keyboard control of the scope too ?

Thanks :)
I have been reading posts in this excellent forum for many years but never posted until now.

I actually prefer using the knobs on the scope instead of a mouse and kb.
Being able to point at things with my mouse cursor in the recording is however a major advantage.
Is there a better option than the 5074 with web interface?
I found one video showing VNC control of the 5074 on YT. It seems to work perfectly, but unfortunately, he only shows how well he controls the scope remotely and not the other way around.

Hum

Why would you grab an MSO to capture HDMI ?/   what avantages would it be ?    hdcp  bypass ?

You have multiples ways to go over that,   even some hdmi input / output (passthru) capture card who doesn't care about hdcp and goes to 4k ???

I’ve not run capture but have used the HDMI output from the MSO5074 on a handful of display devices with zero drama.  Works as advertised, so I should expect it to work well into a capture card too.

The latest firmware bundle includes a VNC server so you could just connect to it that way while still using the device buttons/knobs if desired, but there will be some visual artifacting there just due to VNC.  For streaming use, I think your solution should work out just fine.

Here's an example of video I captured via a remote VNC session.  Note the tearing due to low refresh rate.  HDMI capture should look screen-perfect.

edit: thinking about this, I would expect that both functions could work together for your use case.  You can use VNC to give you mouse control over the remote system, you can still use local controls for knobs etc, all while recording output from HDMI for your video edit.

As Luma show, for Rigol 5K you can use a VNC client/viewer to capture video you need for YT.
Rigol HDO1K has video capture function in his web interface. Also it has HDMI out.

Thanks guys,
Appreciate your help.
I'll probably go for the MSO5074 and use VNC.
From what you write, this should be the perfect solution for me.

I've never tried a BlueAVS but for $10 I'd give HDMI a try, too. If you buy it on Amazon/Aliepress you can send it back if it doesn't work.

Yes, I'll definitely give it a try. However, if VNC is fast enough, it's the better solution for me because I can point at things with the mouse cursor in the captured video.

It allows mouse control so I'm fairly sure it'll show a mouse pointer on screen if you plug a mouse into it.

(It's going to be difficult to use with a mouse otherwise...  :o )

Ideally you want to see the mouse pointer in both the webserver and the scope display depending on which it's plugged in to.

If you're using the web server and there's a mouse plugged into the 'scope then you'll see two.

Ya think, actually only one while it is within the bounds of the scope display.
