Multimeter CAT II Rating Discontinuation
HKJ:
Real life conditions do not necessary have to match exactly the conditions that the standard specify, the test conditions will usually be some simplified version of the real life conditions.
Also note that the impedance for mains voltage do not have anything to do with the impedance of transients, they come from two different sources with different impedance.
EEVblog:
Had totally forgotten about this change to CAT II. Just found out that my new EEVblog branded pocket multimeter will not have 500V CAT II marked on the front because they will not certify it to the new standard if you print it on there.
The product had previous had it marked, but because I changed the model number they have to recertify it and hence it can't have CAT II printed any more :(
