So, what are the trustworthy DMMs down in the "cheap" price range that do a good job of reading TRMS?
Thinking of getting a couple for a dedicated bench function... thanks.

Uni-T 139A and upwards as well as Unit-T 61D and 61E are TRMS.
I think all Brymen multimeters that are not pocket multimeters are TRMS, but they are more expensive.
The Uni-T 61D or 61E may be the best options for bench work since they come with a USB-cable so you can collect data from the multimeters.

ANENG 8008 / 8009.

ANENG 8008 / 8009.
+1 for Aneng 8008, especially for low voltage DC work.
(I'd exercise caution with AC/high voltage work - no particular reason other than to be cautious)
It used to be possible to find these, some times new in the box for about $20 but that might be difficult now:

After these, maybe Uni-T, and Brymen - just a matter your specific needs and budget.....

Uni-T UT139C (the Amazon equivalent is only $20.00).

Well built meters and reasonable input protection. The design is several years old and it is proven to be quite a reliable DMM.
Up in the reasonably priced range would be the UT-61E with many more features, adds bargraph and remote logging, but its input protection is not great (if that is important to you).
The Anengs have a wide gap in the current range and not great input protection (if these are important for you). I would look at the Mestek DM91A before considering the Anengs.
