Narrowed my DSO choice to Siglent SDS1202X-E and OWON XDS2102A
« on: December 17, 2023, 10:16:22 pm »
I've narrowed my DSO choice down to the Siglent SDS1202X-E and the OWON XDS2102, and now I need forum guidance as to which is better.  Ease of data recording for event capture and playback is important to me.

Any other worthy choices in this price range are welcomed.

Unless the price difference is meaningful, the Siglent SDS1104X-E would probably be a better choice IMO.  OWON is generally considered a step down in quality and support, although I have no personal experience.
A 3.5 digit 4.5 digit 5 digit 5.5 digit 6.5 digit 7.5 digit DMM is good enough for most people.

SDS1202X-E
Detailed captures like you seek can be made in BIN (binary) file type which are much smaller than the traditional CSV and many times faster to download onto a USB stick for PC analysis.
When you take these to a PC you need the BIN2CSV converter that you also download from the scope to change BIN back CSV….takes seconds.
However BIN cannot be uploaded into the scope but you can save a capture as a Reference file to have on the display to compare subsequent captures to.

From my personal experience, I would avoid anything cheap that doesn't come from Siglent, Rigol or Gwinstek.

These are the prices I'm currently seeing on Amazon:

The Siglent SDS1104X-E is $450
The OWON XDS2102A is $399
The Siglent SDS1202X-E is $339

If you want 2 channels, get the Siglent. If you want 4 channels, get the Siglent.

The OWON has a button called 'W.Rec' (Waveform Record) that initiates and then stops a recording.  How is recording initiated on either the Siglent SDS1202X-E or SDS1104X-E?  The OWON seems to make this simple.

If you’re to be using the scope directly with a PC, the 4ch X-E is the better choice for its webserver that can download captures direct to the PC browser download folder.
This may not matter to you but for others this is a convenient time saver.

Captures other than PNG images are managed in the Save/Recall menu.
Plain screenshot images are saved directly to USB with the Print (image) button.

Best choice from those mentioned is SDS1104X-E. If you can afford the difference go with that one.

It has segmented mode that records a number of triggered waveforms. It also has a history mode that is always running. Meaning it will remember last xxx captures automatically without need to enable anything.

From his other thread, I think his application is a 'single-shot' case (quite literally) and he wants a completely foolproof way of starting his capture.

OP:  There will be a reasonable way to do what you need with any of these scopes.  For example, you can set the SDS1104X-E (and presumably the SDS1202X-E) to 1s/div, trigger to 'LINE' and then press the 'SINGLE' button.  The scope will start to record at 1MSa/s (one million samples per second) for 14 seconds.  Once captured, you can save the waveform, zoom in on it, download it to a PC and analyze it and so forth.  You can adjust all the parameters I mentioned as needed.

This is great news!  Thank you kindly!!!
