Need image of R&S embedded XP for FSP30
« on: April 01, 2020, 04:48:09 pm »
I have an R&S FSP30 with a "click of death" hard disk. I desperately need a backup image of the R&S special XP embedded operating system.  I have already contacted R&S, but they say they are unable to help. Does anyone have an image they could send me, or a working FSP they could grab an image off of the disk? Thanks for any help.

I noticed that the firmware available on the R&S site is quite large. It turns out that it's a standard Windows installer than will run on XP. Is there any chance that a normal Windows XP (Embedded) installation would work? I've never used any older R&S kit running Windows, so just guessing here.

An normal xp windows would perfectly work  if the drive as enough place

When installed you do some crap cleanup in the add remove control panel,  it will absolutely work the same way with the R&S software

I have not given up yet. I managed to recover most of the data from the original crashed disk and was trying to figure out how to build up an appropriate new NT4embedded disk. But next I am going to try installing the XP version which I have downloaded from R&S.  I am hoping that might work.

Regards,
Donnie

Success!!! I finally got it working. I found out that the reason the unit was not recognizing my hard disk was due to it being too large.  I found an old 10GB drive in an old laptop which the FSP30 BIOS would recognize. After days (and nights) of trying to rebuild an NT4.0 system onto the disk, I gave up trying and reverted to performing a recovery to the blank (all partitions deleted) disk using this Acronis True Image backup I found in the blog: http://www.ko4bb.com/getsimple/index.php?id=manuals&dir=Rohde_Schwarz/Rohde_Schwarz_FSP. Using True Image, I performed a recovery by partition from the backup, each time to the "remaining available space".  After recovering all 3 partitions from the backup, I just plugged the drive into the FSP30 and booted.  It worked!!!! Now I have ordered a 4GB IDE SSD on which to repeat the process, so that I do not run into the same problem with this old hard disk that occurred with the last one.  I don't understand how the original 80GB  disk had ever been recognized by the FSP30 BIOS, but I am guessing that there was some special disk parameter set in BIOS to enable it which were lost when the internal BIOS battery died.  In any case, it is now working with the 10GB drive, which has more than enough free space left over.

in thoses times  loll    an hdd spec in the bios was put in cylinders  head sectors     etc  ... you had to know the drive specs and enter them manually ??

Automatic mode helped a lot,  but sometimes you had the master / slave / cable select thing  ...

yes you had physical size and or partitions size limits  tooo

... lots of fun  loll

glad it worked     :-+
