New handheld scope+DMM, BSIDE 01, 1ch, 10MHz/48MSps (Nov 2023)
« on: November 16, 2023, 05:53:30 pm »
Isn't there enough of these:
- 1ch, 10MHz bandwith, 48MSps
- 100ns/div - 20s/div
- 200mV/div - 100V/div
- AC, DC
- sampling depth 64kB
- 2.8" display, portrait mode
- size 187x74x40mm
- 6000 count DMM
- from around $55-60: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006164727405.html

I kind of like the look of this BSIDE O1 handheld "scope".  It would be nice if it was a bit smaller, but it is only slightly longer than my BM235, and a little narrower.

I like that it lets me use my preferred Pomona multimeter probes (TBC).  More importantly it clearly shows the MIN & MAX value of a measurement, so I can see if a value is not steady and switch to scope mode to check for noise or oscillation.  I am not always at one of my benches with a scope handy, nor do I want to wait for a scope to boot or rearrange things to connect a scope probe.

I have a FNIRSI 5012H pocket scope but never really liked using it.  I am mostly interested in quick low voltage DC measurements, and checking for signals less than 1MHz.  For this I prefer just the DMM probes or other banana plug test leads.  If I need a scope it will be for precise multichannel measurements or decoding, and I will use my MSO5074 or RTB2004.

I was able to pick up a BSIDEO1 today on AliExpress for AU$60 (about US$40) including shipping and tax.  Thankfully the seller had red ones, as I think the green is ugly.  I know BSIDE often sell their products in multiple colours.

I got my BSIDE O1 unit today.  Just had a quick play with it so far, but I like it.

It is not much bigger than the BM235 which is quite a nice mid-sized meter.  The supplied probes are not too chunky (I like the small Pomona ones), and have sharp tips and very soft silicone leads.

Multimeter mode has reasonably quick response to voltage change, and quick continuity.  Oscilloscope mode allowed me to verify some SPI clock and data signals, this was just slow SPI at 125kHz for RGB LEDs.

It took me a while to work out that the MENU button can be used in DMM mode to clear measurement statistics.  Also I had to do a calibration in Scope mode to clear a 1div voltage offset which was messing up the measurements and trigger value.

One other thing that I noticed is that the units are in the bottom right of the display separate (and far away) from the readout value.  So in certain modes like resistance you have to look there to see if the reading is 1 ohm, 1k, 1M, etc.

In oscilloscope mode, can the red beam be changed to another color, for example yellow?

In the topic that you indicated there is a similar question but there is no answer

There are very limited settings, and nothing to adjust the trace colour (or color  :D).

I bought one recently, but I'm not sure about voltage rating on scope. That 300V is P2P or Rms?

DC+AC peak.  So in theory for LF AC only, 600V P2P.

Obviously you have to derate that spec significantly for higher frequencies as it is just using DMM probes.
