Title: New here....so what gear do I need? (PLEASE read!)
Post by: xwarp on April 15, 2014, 03:02:07 am
JUST KIDDING.....  I have enough for what I need to do as a hobbyist, and at work, well some pretty fancy stuff that makes me wish.....

But what I really probably need though is help for what my wife calls a "fetish", (test equipment).

I buy it when I see it and especially if the price is right.

Like the Fluke 10 missing one lead for 5 bucks, because it was missing one lead.... :-+ at the swap meet last Saturday. I have performed the button mod on the case so that I can use the capacitance function.

In any case, I laughed at some of the "new here, what do I need" threads, because after going through ALL 155 pages and looking at quite a few threads, there is certainly enough info for those new to the field to figure out what piece of gear will suit their needs, especially basics.

But, I'm not new to the field. Been in it since '86. Sadly though, where I work, has gone from component level to more/less easter egging.

So I try to keep up the skills here and there on the side at home.

Scopes are my favorite and just recently, got my 4th scope which is a Tek Type 422 with the ac/dc battery option. That will be handy in the garage for automotive work. Got it for a great price off ebay mainly for a spare, but I had to try to fix the time base issue, which resulted in having two operational 422's.

In any case, great forum!

Everyone has a thermal camera.
Don't ask what for, you just need one, ok.

I have done much the same thing.  I kept buying duplicates figuring that I could combine them into one working unit but ended up repairing both without much trouble.  I am way past 4 Tektronix oscilloscopes at this point.
