Title: Newbie looking for an oscilloscope...

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy an oscilloscope but not sure what I NEED exactly. I'm at the basic electronics hobby level working with stepper motors, driver control using the PIC18 microcontrollers and eventually the PIC32's. Something to cater for the PIC18/32's, motor coils, driver PWM and debugging SPI/I2C protocols would be great...

Any input would be appreciated.

Each scope is good for something else. If you want the record function, real 0,5mV/div, hi-res mode and long memory (without mark or search function) and you will hardly ever use the XY mode, consider the Rigol DS2000, for example.
The DSOX2000 scope is better for hunting random glitches, but not many people actually need it.

How do the USB PC based Picotech PicoScopes compare to portable scopes in general? Seems like very little hardware in the PicoScopes with a big price tag?
