Hello elite hackers & engineers. Forgive the noob question - I have indeedly searched through the forum a bit.
I'm quite particular with needing a multi-chan scope that makes no sound when its powered up & working. I'd always found it difficult to use the internet to find a scope that won't annoy me.
I've borrowed a Tektronix TDS 2024B and its excellent and ticks all my boxes. Its small - it makes no noise - and the bandwidth is great for my needs.
I'd buy one one - except I've noticed its quite old. I'm fine with an old scope - its just I though I'd ask if there was a more sensible scope I could buy since some time has passed since 2008. You guys seem to know this scope series inside out.
This scope rolls for $1.5k or so second hand I think, so I'm calibrating my expectations accordingly. But you fellas may know better.
At the moment I'm doing in audio stuff, so I know the 8-bit converter might bite me in the bottom at some point. Anyone got any low hanging fruit ideas?

Nah, they all make whiny noises.
Some people, me included, have done fan swaps on them and got them really quiet but "no sound"? Nope.
The R+S HMO1002 was a nice little fanless 'scope but they don't make them any more. Maybe you could find one, I don't think they were big sellers though (too expensive when new)
The Analog Discovery is definitely fanless and does all sorts of good things for audio work.
You might also be able to use your sound card.
(hint: Download the Analog Discovery software, it's free and it can use your sound card...)

Most affordable 'scopes are 8-bit.
The current go-to budget suggestions are
Hantek DSO2C10 which starts just under $200 USD.
Siglent SDSa1104X-U which is around $400 USD. (in the US...)
I'm not sure what the best 'budget' option is for higher bit-depth.
A Picoscope 4424A is 12-bits with 20MHz Bandwidth and 80MS/S. It also has a 14-bit waveform generator. - But it is a USB PC oscilloscope not a stand alone device. And it is about £1,000

I wonder if the fan in the MicSig ST01104C would be a bother to you? It seems like a nice scope for the price.

I think the OWON SDS1102 doesn't have a fan (teardown starts at 24:00):

My first DSO was a TDS2012B and was quite fond of it however the stuff we have now will really kick its arse.
You're not far from us so drop us mail and arrange to drop by and check out what we have for much less than a $1.5k budget. We have a few models to chose from and more arriving in a few days.

I've got a Micsig. It's not particularly loud and it produces so little heat that the fan doesn't even switch on until after about 20 minutes.
My Rigol was much louder.
It would be a good target for a super-silent fan if it bothered me, which it doesn't, but it does make a little bit of noise.

There's excellent information here. Thank you fellas. There's quite a bit for me to go through.
Maybe I could indeedly get a pico scope.
I like this guy's channel too. Its amazing what 8 bits really does get ya. I always forget its about how ya zoom in.
There's a lot to evaluate so I'm still going through stuff.
You're right in that these new scopes have so many new firmware/software features. Like this OWON supporting labview & stuff. Krikey dickens.
I'm gonna go on a review journey. Thanks fellas I appreciate it.

Picoscopes are quality kit. I know, I have 3 ... ;D
Using a scope with a PC is different. I personally find it more than intuitive.
I can use PC scope and standalone scope with knobs and I don't mind.
Some people have a problem with it. Keep that in mind.
OTOH they support products for many years. Software gets upgraded all the time and new features added.
You can download software from Picotech web site and run it in DEMO mode and get a feel of it...

thanks mate! this was a close contender. just discovered in the teardown ya linked there that the scope has no real shielding :( - looks like it doesn't have a single shot capture either which is strange aye?
thanks mate im gonna put it on my B list & keep going through my options. i appreciate your help. im being quite picky cos i kinda only get one shot at the purchase aye.

hello sir. the analog discovery looks absolutely freaking amazing. i want 5 of them. for some reason though i just can't seem to get myself onto a PC based scope. i wonder if having a second monitor would sooth this anxiety.

hey man, looks like you got some interesting stuff there for sale. if theres a scope there that has no fan im keen. or at least a fan that never turns on
