Hello all, I have about 10 scopes. With the exception of a Tek 3054C they are all fairly large. I bought the subject OWON 7102V several years ago and recently brought it out because it is small, fits on my office desk nicely as it isn't that deep, has a battery, and is good for 100Mhz or so. But some of the encoders are acting up and they don't look easy to fix. Also, it doesn't have serial decode and other logic tracing functions, oh, and yes, I have a nice little check coming this week, ha, need I say more? I was looking around and wondering what the current best bang for the buck is? I remember when the Rigol 1054 was the best deal around because it could be hacked up, etc. I was looking at a Siglent 1104x-e or 1104x-u. I see there is $100usd between them. I haven't looked closely and I'm not overly familiar with the Siglent brand but I suspect the lower priced one can be upgraded to the other? Rigol has a new one out two O see 1074z. And I see people mention Hantek and others. Anyway, given a budget under $500, there are quite a few scopes but I'm wondering as I said, which is the best price/performer that can be upgraded for free? And having a battery would be nice like my 7102V. I don't need signal generators as I have a dozen of them as well. I also have a ton of probes so no added benefit if they are packaged in. I should also mention that I have Parkinson tremors in my hands so the user interface is important. Biggest frustration right now on the 7102 is I have a hard time with the encoders as it is and now that they are skipping and jumping all over the place, it drives me crazy. I find that multifunction buttons or knobs to be more difficult than dedicated knobs and buttons sometimes. Thanks. Jerry |

See attachment. --- Quote ---I should also mention that I have Parkinson tremors in my hands so the user interface is important. --- End quote --- :( Sorry to hear this and yes it will make some use challenging especially with encoders that don't have detents. For these Siglents it's VPos, HPos and the multifunction control which is used in some menu selection and for Cursors. Most encoders are also pressable for Set/Enter or Zero in the case of H and V Pos and some menu selection can be made by pressing menu buttons to sequence down a list rather than user the encoder. With these compact scopes multifunction encoder experience is enhanced with 2 or 3 fingers resting atop the scope to stabilize the hand while making adjustments with thumb and forefinger. |

Thanks for the chart. I have to go read more about the x-e as it seems like the performer for a small package. I also have to find the equivalent rigol. I see they make a 1074z now. I'll keep the Owon, of course, as the battery in it makes it very handy. If I get caught bringing another scope in my house though, my wife will commit me. |

Bang for buck it's hard to beat although the somewhat cheaper X-U is gaining a following with those that don't need all the bells and whistles. Good luck with your selection Jerry. |
