OWON 7102V replacement
« on: January 09, 2022, 10:46:17 am »
Hello all,

I have about 10 scopes. With the exception of a Tek 3054C they are all fairly large.  I bought the subject OWON 7102V several years ago and recently brought it out because it is small, fits on my office desk nicely as it isn't that deep, has a battery, and is good for 100Mhz or so.  But some of the encoders are acting up and they don't look easy to fix.  Also, it doesn't have serial decode and other logic tracing functions, oh, and yes, I have a nice little check coming this week, ha, need I say more?

I was looking around and wondering what the current best bang for the buck is?  I remember when the Rigol 1054 was the best deal around because it could be hacked up, etc.  I was looking at a Siglent 1104x-e or 1104x-u.  I see there is $100usd between them.  I haven't looked closely and I'm not overly familiar with the Siglent brand but I suspect the lower priced one can be upgraded to the other?  Rigol has a new one out two O see 1074z.  And I see people mention Hantek and others.

Anyway, given a budget under $500, there are quite a few scopes but I'm wondering as I said, which is the best price/performer that can be upgraded for free?  And having a battery would be nice like my 7102V.  I don't need signal generators as I have a dozen of them as well.  I also have a ton of probes so no added benefit if they are packaged in.  I should also mention that I have Parkinson tremors in my hands so the user interface is important.  Biggest frustration right now on the 7102 is I have a hard time with the encoders as it is and now that they are skipping and jumping all over the place, it drives me crazy.  I find that multifunction buttons or knobs to be more difficult than dedicated knobs and buttons sometimes.

Thanks.

Jerry

No, they are 2 different product lines but SDS1104X-E can be upgraded to the 200 MHz model and options enabled however X-U is WYSIWYG.

See attachment.

:(
Sorry to hear this and yes it will make some use challenging especially with encoders that don't have detents.
For these Siglents it's VPos, HPos and the multifunction control which is used in some menu selection and for Cursors. Most encoders are also pressable for Set/Enter or Zero in the case of H and V Pos and some menu selection can be made by pressing menu buttons to sequence down a list rather than user the encoder.
With these compact scopes multifunction encoder experience is enhanced with 2 or 3 fingers resting atop the scope to stabilize the hand while making adjustments with thumb and forefinger.

Thanks for the chart.  I have to go read more about the x-e as it seems like the performer for a small package.  I also have to find the equivalent rigol.  I see they make a 1074z now.  I'll keep the Owon, of course, as the battery in it makes it very handy.   If I get caught bringing another scope in my house though, my wife will commit me.

You might get committed, but if you can take your scopes with you...?  ;D

They certainly are and I'm still astounded how much capability is in a small package....and stuff is still being added like the new Logging feature and NTP clock.  :o
I was on the beta team for SDS1104X-E so it's a product I know fairly well however these days it's hard to find the time to fully explore all its new features.
Bang for buck it's hard to beat although the somewhat cheaper X-U is gaining a following with those that don't need all the bells and whistles.

Good luck with your selection Jerry.

thanks, again.  Is the 1204 just an upgraded (or hacked) 1104x-e?  I'm about ready to push the button, or at least aim for it.

SDS1104/1204X-E frontends are a 200 MHz design and the SDS1104X-E 100 MHz BW is SW limited.
You can find plenty of info about these in the couple of hacking threads here.  ;)

Any chance you are in the US Jerry as Saelig do a 6% discount for EEVblog members ?
If that works for you ask for the code in the Saelig thread.  ;)

On the encoders. A couple of years back I had issues with my 7102V encoders. I emailed Owon and they sold me a new encoder PCB for about 20 bucks. I put a little Caig De-Oxit on each encoder and cycled it a few times before I replaced the board, IIRC the new board came with new knobs as the old knobs did not work with the new encoders.

I was very surprised and delighted with the service that Owon provided.

Does the 4-channel version of the Siglent SDS1104X-E have similar features and performance?

I don't currently own any 4-channel 'scopes but I would very much like to get one. My current everyday bench scope is a Tektronix TDS2002B. I also own a couple of vintage analog 'scopes but I don't use them very often, mainly just when I'm not satisfied with the way a digital 'scope displays certain events. That said, the TDS2002B is certainly adequate for most of my work. In what ways would the Siglent SDS1104X-E model be an improvement?

Same scope as mentioned above.
As you're in the US you have numerous choices of where to source one from and recommend Saelig whom offer members here a discount code of 6%. Search for their thread and ask for the code.

TDS2012B was my last Tek and 2ch DSO.

Much greater feature set for starters but the larger display and more connectivity options are useful for many too.

Run through the chart above and line each feature against your Tek to see which features are to be an advantage to you. The first you would notice is the larger 7" display.
