Title: Philips PM 3216 scope makes whining noise
Post by: parabuzzle on October 20, 2013, 04:15:20 pm
Hey guys,

So I just picked up a Philips PM 3216 for $20. Its got a broken bezel (as seems to be the case with most of these units) and the contrast plate is missing but it works! woohoo!

So, when I brought it home and hooked it up to a source It reads fine and is surprisingly close to correct given the last calibration was in 1988. The problem is that the unit starts to whine pretty hard after it warms up (about 60-120 seconds). I can't really tell where its coming from but my suspicion is the power supply.

Thoughts?

-Mike

Dying capacitors most likely.

I checked the PSU caps. They all look correct.

I channeled my father and I hit the case (like he used to do with the old TV) when the whining started and the whining went away. It hasn't come back.. ahhh.. old equipment :)
