After installing version version 00.04.04, my DS1052E is no longer able to transfer "long memory" data via USB.

That doesn't sound good then, can you downgrade to the previous version?

That experience was indeed  not very satisfying... I tried a downgrade but without success.

When I asked Rigol Europe what could be done, they had just one suggestion: To send the DS1052E to a Rigol office in China. Of course I would have to pay for shipping. Since for example DHL wants more than 40 Euro to transport  a parcel from Germany to China, I did not bother to do that.

Instead I bought meanwhile another DSO.

Anyway, here Mechatrommer writes that he was able to re-flash a DS1052:

Might be an option to first make a backup of the flash chip's content before daring to try a firmware upgrade.

That's terrible luck then, did Rigol know of any firmware issues with the latest version when you contacted them? I'll be giving it a miss that's for sure.

The email exchange with the Rigol support did not give me a clue if they were aware of this problem. To be fair and to give the full picture, I observed the error on a Linux machine and I assume that Rigol runs tests, if any, mostly under Windows. So there is a minor chance that the problem does not appear with Windows or MacOS. I tried though some Windows software from Rigol in a VirtualBox with Windows, and the problem occurred there too. But if the problem is somehow related to some lower level Linux USB driver, the virtual Windows machine would be affected from such a problem too. So, there might be a small chance that the problem with reading "long memory" data is limited.

OTOH, while working on a Python library to control the DS1052E I noticed several quirks of the Rigol firmware. Some are just weird, others are more serious. Overall, I am not very impressed with the software side of the DS1052. But it is IMHO still a quite good DSO for its price.

And then they'll charge you import tax when it comes back again.
