Possible new DMM test, @#$%@# cheap meters....
« on: June 21, 2023, 08:13:37 pm »
Working outside today and reminded that if I had a way to simulate direct sunlight, I would have added to my testing.  Second photo was after maybe 20 seconds from moving it inside the trailer.

Reminds me of my "fail of the day", as I forgot a Fluke87 on the top of a resistive loadbank...under power...
Display was black.. :scared:
But after cooling it down, everything was fine... :phew:

Must be cheap - they didn't even give the poor thing a name or model number.  :palm:
I told my friends I could teach them to be funny, but they all just laughed at me.

I'm guessing it's at the bottom, in the cropped off area below the dial.

I'll also bet it has the digits 8, 3 and 0 on the number.

It could either be the UV or the IR that killed it.  How long was it out in the sun?

Edit: I guess if it was the heat then it could die in a few minutes.

It's this exact meter.  Still somewhat functional after 10+ years of use.  I am waiting for it to die.

It still has the same 9V battery in there from when I made that video 4 years ago.  Wonder if it has leaked yet.

It's still working so the battery contacts must not be destroyed. Therefore: no Duracell.  :-DD

I'm guessing that will happen with most DMMs given enough exposure.  100,000+ lux is a bit much for most LCD panels.

I didn't even know LCD's were affected by sunlight/uv light. But I don't live in a particulairy sunny climate.

But it would be interesting to see if different brands/models react differently.
Just like the cold temperature test where some LCD's just became unresponsive where others just seemed to keep working fine, like in that keysigth U1282a where the display wasn't able to update anymore. Not that I would experience those type of temperatures here, but interesting to see nonetheless  :D.

Is UV/sunlight or just heat the culprit ?

I can feel another Joe test coming on......

The sunlight is the heat (IR).
