Oltronix B60-1T labpac power supply schematics / service manual
« on: October 25, 2017, 08:32:04 pm »
Hello forum,

I could not resist but to buy a pretty pretty Oltronix boat anchor.
It has not arrived yet, but should be in fully working condition.
Because it is always a nice thing to have just in case it is need one day: Does anyone have schematics and / or a service manual for that thing?
The Radio Museum website has the device listed and I can see some preview of an uploaded service manual. However, the website would not let me download / order it. I put in my name and mail address as requested, and the form is giving me three green thumbs up, but the "request" button stays grayed out :/ I also tried different browsers to no avail.

Here are some pictures of the power supply. I do not own the pictures, these were taken from the sellers listing and I claim "fair use". Will update pictures once I can take my own, but I NEED to show you that beauty :)

BTW, nice grab! I have 4 Oltronix PSUs and I like them very much. If the need does arise, give the guys at Oltronix NL a call - they are the follow-on organisation to the danish and swiss Oltronix operations and they are really nice and helpful!

Thanks!
I had actually never heard of Oltronix before. However, when I stumbled upon the listed device I was instantly sold by the triple voltage/current selection feature and overall looks. After doing some research on the Oltronix PSUs I am even more positive, that these things are capable and well built.
The other devices I was looking at before clicking "I want that!" were a GW Instek PSP-603 and an HP 6205B. I would have bought the PSP-603 and not even discover the Oltronix, but the seller replied that he was awaiting payment (how I hate, when people do not update/deactivate their listings).

:-/O That was a lucky turn of events however :)

Since someone from a German forum was so kind to provide me with scans of the service manual, I would like to share it with you - in case anyone else comes across this power supply. I merged the images into one PDF file (1.8Mb), but because of the very strict file size limitations I have to host it on my server.

Download the Oltronix B60-1T service manual here.

The individual images were also uploaded by the original provider to the Radio Museum site

The manual is a very good read, explaining how the device works and what each individual piece of the circuit does - including the maintenance and calibration instructions. Unlike some other guy stated in an article (here or elsewhere?) I think the device is very nicely built in terms of maintainability. That guy was complaining how there are no detachable connectors and that getting into the device was obnoxious.
However, if you have the manual and know how it is done, it is an absolute dream to work on: You simply remove two screws from the bottom and slide of the bottom and side cover (one piece u-bent aluminium). Then you can turn a latch and swing out the main PCB with all of the potentiometers and pleated resistances (yes, pleated - it is 1970s tech after all).
In case you blew a power transistor or a fuse, you do not even have to open the unit as those parts are accessible from the outside!
I could easily calibrate most of the unit myself. The built in voltmeter and ammeter now match my trusty multimeters and the ten-turn voltage dial. The only bit still needing maintenance is the current limiting range. I still need to learn about how exactly the pleated resistances work (setting the upper current limits) and I need a big enough dummy load. Current limiting works well, but the values are a about 25% to high in respect to the actual specs.

Yes, I saw the video too. I think I came to it from this site.
Personally, I would go much further for any Oltronix LPS than a GW Instek contraption could be thrown even with the aid of a large catapult. I have a B703DT (triple output), a B32-10R (0..30V/0..10A), a B8-7 (0..8(10)V, 0..7A) and a fixed Switchpac100 and they all give sterling service!
I wrote on the aquisition of the B32-10R here

 Thanks for the manual, anyway!

I pushed the pictures to imgur, there are also some photos of the guts.

I also replaced the original terminal posts with Hirschmann PKI 10A because the original ones were a little corroded and did not retain my 4mm lab cables well (holes only 10mm deep vs 17mm on the Hirschmanns).
