Power Designs 2K-10 power supply teardown


After watching too much EEVblog, etc, I have been inspired to make my own technology video.
I don't pretend to be any video production expert, the video is just a crude job with me waving around a smartphone. This is not something I do professionally every day with lots of equipment and experience, so try not to be too harsh. :)

This is a Power Designs 2K-10 0-2kV regulated DC power supply, 10mA Iout.

I'm not sure exactly when it was made, but it's probably at least as old as me or a little older. Good quality stuff that has stood the test of time, though. It's US-made, and it's running off a 115VAC stepdown transformer in this video.

Since making the video I have used a Fluke 1000:1 40kV voltage divider probe to measure the HV output on the 'scope, and the regulation is very good, with quite clean DC.

A good little power supply for testing devices that require a bias on the kV scale at low currents - scintillation detectors and other technologies involving photomultiplier tubes were mainly what I had in mind, as well as Geiger-Muller tubes.

And I got it for only 5 bucks! (it did require a little bit of love, such as cleaning out dirt and grime, replacing the fuseholder, mains cable and two of the neons, as well as the 115V stepdown transformer.)

This is an excellent unit, thanks for the review.  I've been toying with buying one as many remain on the eBay. I have an electrophoretic unit that generates up to 2-3kV, but its a SMPS, and its very noisy.  But I use it only for destructive testing of dielectrics so cleanliness isn't required.
