Title: Probemaster, good first impression
Post by: WastelandTek on October 24, 2017, 06:09:31 am
So, I have had this 1x/10x probe kicking around for some years.  I'm not even sure where it came from; maybe it was with a scope, or some random hamfest lot.  Here a couple months ago I ran over it with a chair roller and broke the spring loaded hook tip thing.  Finally last week it percolated to the top of the project pile and I attempted to repair it with a combination of cyanoacrilate and heatshrink.  Alas, I applied too much heat and buggered it up well and truly.

The compensator body said "Probe Master model 3901-2" on it so, really without much hope, I googled it.  I'm not even sure why I bothered, I mean, who the hell sells parts for their older products these days.

Imagine my surprise when the manufacturers very helpful website indicated that not only do they sell the proper hook tip, but that it is in stock for $4.99US with free shipping!  That was Friday, it arrived in today's post and is an exact replacement.  It also came with a card earnestly urging me to call if I had any problems, and a 15% discount code should I want more probes...and looking around their site, I think I just might.

They seem to manufacture some very nice probes, including perfect replacements for Tektronix P6063B, P6129B and similar probes with the readout actuator, for prices fairly comparable to what the dwindling old stock goes for on Ebay.

It probably seems like I'm shilling for this outfit, but I had never noticed them before and I guess I'm pretty impressed so far.

here is their probe to probe cross reference page http://probemaster.com/scope-probe-to-scope-probe/ (http://probemaster.com/scope-probe-to-scope-probe/)

I think I'm going to get me some for my Tek 5000 projects, they look really nice.

Thanks for the review, regarding the readout actuator, does it emulate perfectly as genuine Tek's probe ? What Tek scope did you test with it ?

All I've got so far is the hook tip for the other probe.  I don't have one with the readout yet.  But they sell 4 different readout variants of their probes and call out specific ones for various Tek applications.  I am pretty confident they will work, its just a resistor and an extra conductor.

+1  :-+ for Probemaster here too.
Lots of folks around here hold their DMM probes in high regard.  One thing I like about their DMM probes is that you can have them customized. For example, I had retractable-shroud banana plugs put on mine as I use them occasionally with DMMs having binding posts which don't take normal safety shrouded plugs.

Another happy customer of Probemaster's products (both DMM and oscilloscope probs).  :-+
