Problems connecting XDM3051 through a router
« on: February 23, 2023, 02:34:22 pm »
I have tried to connect to my OWON XDM3051 over LAN in several ways. All were tested using Testcontroller on my WIN10 PC:

  • Entered an IP in the non-DHCP range on XDM and 5025 as the port, 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask, and the IP of my router as Gateway IP - No connection
  • Same settings, but now with the IP of my PC as Gateway IP - No connection
  • Tried the same on an old router with only the two participants - No connection
  • Connected the XDM directly to my PC and entered an IP manually: 192.168.1.1 -  Data entered on the XDM: IP192.168.1.2, Gateway192.168.1.1 - Success!!

Has any of you had success in connecting the XDM3051 through a router?

Thanks / Peter

To access devices inside the home network, you need to configure "Virtual Servers" on a router.

The virtual servers setting should be to access LAN devices from the WAN (Internet), which I don't think the OP is trying to do.

Typically you would use DHCP on both devices while they are connected to the same LAN segment (inside network on your router).  Then verify both devices have an IP address in the same subnet.  They will now be able to reach each other.  Of course the de-facto test is to ping the Owon's IP address from the PC.

It is common for basic devices like this to have trouble going through a router between two different subnets, so I would avoid that for now.

Thanks for your replies,
I can confirm that the XDM3051, My PC, and the router are working in the same IP segment in my network: 192.168.1.x - But the XDM3051 can't be reached.
I have entered the address and MAC of the XDM in the manual list of my ASUS router, also without success!
Using the RS232 port enables me to do measurements. But that's definitely not what I had in mind when I bought this, in other ways OK instrument.

It may be obvious, but have you set gateway and netmask on the meter? As it may have badly implemented DHCP?

Gateway and netmask typically wouldn't be an issue if both are on the same LAN segment.  Although it's technically possible to use something like 255.255.255.255, I wouldn't expect this normally.

To start, it would be best to list out here the full IP, subnet mask and gateway that the Owon and the PC have right now.

Then, what do you get when you ping the Owon from the PC?

Side note, is there a chance the PC is using wireless instead of the LAN?  That could add some additional things in the mix to check out, such as wireless client isolation and WLAN-->LAN blocking.
