Vintage Philips GM3153 Kathograph (Oscilloscope) late 1930's
« on: April 15, 2019, 03:49:47 pm »
Hi
Thought you might like to see a vintage Oscilloscope from around the late 1930's made by Philips in the Netherlands. I've inherited this from my father, he used to be a what we'd call a Electronic hobbyist. I've no idea where he got this from but probably a surplus store somewhere. He's changed out some of the capacitors to some more modern (at the time) there around 400v rating.

Have I turned it on.... No.  Very reluctant to put a supply on it as the caps and valves are probably very fragile. Even though some of the caps have been changed they were probably done over 30 years ago, so probably need changing again. I don't recall having seen it working so I'm not even sure it would work anyway.  I have found an instruction book with circuit diagram online..

Wow... A very nice oscilloscope indeed. I love the old Philips logo with the stars.

If only the capacitors didn't leak... I would be very torn between keeping the original look or repairing it.

I have an early 1940s Philips radio that shares a few common traits, such as the voltage switching dial, the mains socket and the base of the yellow valvo tubes.

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...

Very interesting. :-+ It's always cool to look at really vintage electronics.
