121GW App Testing

Please use your apple app store email address as I suspect it will make things easier.
Please take screen shots, even if there isn't a problem we don't have enough screen sizes in the office to submit to the App store.

We need screen shots specifically from an iPad and 5.5" iphones, we currently don't have any of these devices.

@Seppy,

Well, I have an iPad and a 4.7" iPhone, and have written a few apps including the core and plotting part of an i121GW app.  Unfortunately, I don't have a meter to test with.  Will the screen shots you want require a connection?

I'd like to try it anyway.

I installed the app and did a very quick test logging temperature for a few minutes and then mailed the data to myself. It looks good so far. I would like to have the start Date and Time set in the file header. Maybe there is an option for that, I have not done any exploration...

There isn't currently an option for that, I'll add it in, I don't want to do a full time stamp for each item though as it makes the data less importable.
I can however change the default filename to the following, how does that sound (it would also be the default email title):
"Log DD-MM-YY, HH-MM-ss.csv"

Edit: for sortablility the following format was selected, what do people think?
"YYMMDD, HHMMss Log.csv"

P.S. Post screenshots if possible we really need them for the App store submission.

Yes the screen shots would require a connection as the connecting screen is pretty boring.
Hopefully your unit arrives soon.

Yes, but I'd suggest without the comma. Just "YYMMDD HHMMSS Log.csv" would be fine.

I'll try to post some, but I only got the notification today. It might take me a day or two to try it out since it's the working week.

I’m confused. You are able to log or retrieve logged data with the App?

I’ve installed it on my iPad mini. I.m getting a nice mirror of the meters display but no ability to log or retrieve logged data that I can tell. The settings and maths buttons appear essentially non-functional.

OK, one problem is it is insisting on iOS 11.3 or later. That's a problem for me. My iPad is running iOS 10 and I won't upgrade it since IOS 11 took away functionality that I use. I will give it a try on my phone.

Just click save under the graph.
Settings is where you add devices.
Maths is for if you owned multiple devices, you can have two plots multiply etc.

Edit : Screenshots :)

Just click save under the graph.

Thanks, but there is no save botton under the graph on my screen. There is <settings>,  <maths> and [ 0 ] only.     This is iOS 11.4 on an iPad mini 4.

Also X and Y axis values non sensible. See attached. (Meter on DC volts with open leads).

Ah right, I need to post my tutorial video, use it in portrait ,landscape is really just for fullscreen.
I might get it to show save regardless of fullscreen or not but this would take away some screen space.

Open circuit voltages will tend to be all over the place, just the result of a quite high impedance input.

Do you happen to have the unscaled version? If it won't upload, could you email it here eev.davidledger@gmail.com
PS. I might fork the beta testing to another thread soon, i'll move the posts.

Yeah, i get that but axis values Not corresponding  - maybe a function of range.?

Also FWIW, i use my iPad mini almost exclusively in landscape mode. Having all buttons available would be nice.

When I hit Save, here's what a log looks like.

One thing, it would be nice to have a "pause" button on the screen to stop the graph scrolling while you look at it.

Even better if it keeps collecting data in the background like a "lap" button on a stopwatch, so that when you unfreeze it refreshes the graph with the extra data collected.

Another thing, it would be nice if the collection interval was a round number of seconds per sample.

(Also, I'm not sure that many digits of time resolution are meaningful.)

Ok just checked on my iPhone 5s. Logging “save” button works fine there. But still no joy on the iPad mini.

Can you take a screenshot that shows your full portrait screen with one of the DC values that do not correspond, will help in isolating any issue.
I'll try get my hands on an iPad Mini, I haven't got one to test with so in the mean time what are settings that resulted in that error, does it happen every time?

Will run some tests with my iPhone 6 tomorrow once I put my meter back together (again).

My iPad mini is the original model, so it can't run iOS 11 unfortunately.  I considered upgrading, but I just don't use it enough (or do enough iOS app dev) to justify buying a new model.  I may have to eventually now that Apple is forcing all new apps to be built for iOS 11.

Just got the app loaded and here are a number of screenshots from running temperature monitoring and setting up and running the maths function on the temperature using the one device for both inputs, showing selecting the settings and the outcome.  From an iphone 7 iOS 11.4.  If there are specific use cases you want captured let me know.

I accumulated the screen shots in dropbox which can be found here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/h55xuwofz8025z9/AADyFKSlYDJ_HJe0xtVhYkqNa?dl=0.

Everything seemed to be working with the exception of the vertical units which are not degrees.

I just read the App Store submission guidelines, and while it says apps must be able to run on the currently shipping OS it doesn't say they can't run on older versions of the OS.

It would be very helpful for people with older devices or people who don't want to be on the bleeding edge of OS releases if the app could run on iOS 10 or earlier.

Are there any specific features of iOS 11 that it relies on? This is the first App I have tried that insists on iOS 11.3 as the minimum supported version.

My iPad mini is the original model, so it can't run iOS 11 unfortunately.  I considered upgrading, but I just don't use it enough (or do enough iOS app dev) to justify buying a new model.  I may have to eventually now that Apple is forcing all new apps to be built for iOS 11.

True.

My understanding is that all new apps submitted to the store must be built with the iOS 11 SDK.  I'm haven't done any iOS app dev recently, so I haven't dug into what backwards compatibility that provides.  I imagine that Apple wants to encourage people to move to new devices though.

I guess it will be a matter of what Seppy can build using the Xamarin framework, and I'm sure there are some limits to what they can support.

I can say that my iPad has been running iOS 10.x for a long time, and no app downloads or updates have so far complained about the OS being unsupported. This app seems unique in saying it "requires iOS 11.3 or higher before it can be installed".

My guess is that the minimum OS level is a setting in the build that can be changed, and that perhaps the app package is picking up a default value corresponding to the latest OS release?

Well, on my iPhone 6 running iOS 11.3.1 (soon 11.4), I have several older apps installed some time ago that won't run anymore.
e.g. Trying to start the ONsemi app shows a popup
Quote
"ONsemi" Needs to Be Updated.
The developer of this app needs to update it to work with iOS 11.
[Learn More]  [OK]
(Yes, the capitalisation of "to Be" is exactly like that - unusual for Apple).
It then has a link to a learn more screen (Settings->General->About->Applications) which shows 14 apps I have on my phone that no longer work, and with no new updates in the app store.
That includes other large companies like Officeworks and Kathmandu that apparently haven't updated their apps.

Anyway, back to the 121GW app - it appears that Xamarin does support older versions of iOS.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/xamarin/ios/platform/
So unless Seppy is using some specific features requiring iOS 11 then he can probably adjust a build/publish setting for backwards compatibility (iOS 9 and above would be nice).

I have done some more testing and am seeing issues when my phone gets about 1.3 m away from the 121GW.  Moving it closer does not recover the connection. There could be some interference so I will do some tests in a clean environment later (outside in a park maybe). The phone is an iPhone 7 running iOS 11.4

I was going to test on my iPad Pro but TestFlight said that I used up my single allotted test copy. Maybe there is a setting to allow each tester to try it on multiple devices?

A screen capture will be sent via mail.

How about

"YYYYMMDD-HHMMss-121GW.csv"

or

"121GW-YYYYMMDD-HHMMss.csv"

?

The '121GW-' prefix could be a setting in the app.

Us UNIXy guys don't appreciate spaces in filenames. I don't really see the need for commas either in this data. Space separated should be sufficient, in which case the suffix would be .txt or .dat or something.

It would be good to set the logging interval, and as someone else said, a "round number" for the time interval is nicer.

It's true though, spaces can cause grief in scripts and on the command line. I think underscore is more portable than dash, so that would give a name like YYMMDD_HHMMSS.csv

Actually, comma separated with a .csv extension enables apps like Excel to open the file directly as a spreadsheet without any need for import filtering. So I would strongly favor retaining the current csv format and file type.

I will never open the data in a spreadsheet but I can live with the commas, and maybe I even need them for the header. 98% of the time I will be using R and if there are spaces in the header without commas that will be a problem. In any case I will still have to cleanup the column names since they will become the column names in a R dataframe, and if spaces, and parens, in filenames  are an issue, they are far worse in variable names!

Only in part of the world, some countries uses "," as decimal separator and ";" between values in csv files.

That is true, but a localization setting in the app could take care of that. I'm sure when you set up an iOS device you can choose country, region and culture settings to your preference.

With that said, I believe the tendency in science and engineering is to standardize on "." as the decimal separator these days.

I just got a notification about a post in the discussion forum and ended up here. I am an iOS user. iphone 6, ipad mini, iphone 4. Looking forward to an iOS app!

You can use the app now if you like, just fill in the form at the top of the page and become a beta tester :)

How do I get the app? i searched the app store on my iphone for 121gw and eevblog and nothing came up.

Hello, you should have received an invite in your email to join the beta program.

Alright, I have made the format as follows:
yyyyMMdd_HHmmss_Log.csv

This will be in the next beta version (it will be available to you soon) release.

Many programmers are not very good at using that. I have seen csv files with "," as both decimal separator and value separator.

I prefer a fixed file format, but Misrosoft has decided that default csv file format varies by country and they do not care if you use it for engineering.

If there is a comma in a cell the cell should be in quotes "". Most editors recognize strings and will ignore commas between quotes.

No, that's not what HKJ means.

CSV in English speaking countries:

Code: [Select]
Time (s), Voltage DC (V)
0.05082, 0.0005
0.111293, 0.0006
0.831361, 0.0006
1.310702, 0.0006

CSV in European countries:

Code: [Select]
Time (s); Voltage DC (V)
0,05082; 0,0005
0,111293; 0,0006
0,831361; 0,0006
1,310702; 0,0006

That's how Excel works, and it can really mess people up.

A few observations from tonight's testing:

1. I would like a way to change the graph update rate (e.g. every second, or every 5 seconds)
  - the maximum speed update is sometimes too fast, for example if logging temperature

2. The scroll and pinch gestures on the graph area only affect the time axis, not the vertical axis
  - if I pinch or drag in a vertical direction I would like it to affect the vertical graph scale

3. A minor bug: put the meter in temperature mode, press Hold so the value freezes, press Reset to clear the graph
  - The vertical axis does not display and graph does not draw a visible line

4. Suggestion: when you press Hold the displayed value is frozen and no new readings are sampled (as expected)
  - In this case the graph should stop scrolling since there is no new data to log

5. OS compatibility: I'd like to test the app on my iPad if you can remove the iOS 11.3 required version when installing

Ah right, I've standardized with a ',' symbol. May make it locale aware but no real need at this point.

A feature suggestion:

6. When the meter is in auto-hold mode, the logging feature could record one data point per sample (one line of the data table per beep)

This would make it convenient to collect a series of measurements for later processing.

Could you take a screenshot of these two issues, do you
Ah right, I need to post my tutorial video, use it in portrait ,landscape is really just for fullscreen.
Doh, OK  of course.

So in portrait, the save and other buttons are there. But, when I push save it kicks me out of the app (whether logging or not).

Quote
Open circuit voltages will tend to be all over the place, just the result of a quite high impedance input.

Yeah, i get that but axis values Not corresponding  - maybe a function of range.?

Also FWIW, i use my iPad mini almost exclusively in landscape mode. Having all buttons available would be nice.

Can you take a screenshot that shows your full portrait screen with one of the DC values that do not correspond, will help in isolating any issue.
I'll try get my hands on an iPad Mini, I haven't got one to test with so in the mean time what are settings that resulted in that error, does it happen every time?

OK, so I can't take a screenshot of the first issue - that is on the iPad mini, when I tap the save button at the bottom of the graph, it just kicks me out of that app every time and puts me back onto the home screen without saving any logged data.  This is consistent and does it every single time.  The app is still running in the background - I am just booted out of it.

The second issue - the graph axis values with open leads on volt setting was mostly my misreading.  I did not immediately get that the small m - meant millivolts and with the tiny font I did not at first see the negative sign for negative values, so without a zero on the y axis it was difficult to orient the labels to what I was seeing on the digital readout.   It would help if the axis labels specified the units (eg mV for millivolt - not just m).  And with the small font, the negative sign so close to the y axis line with hash marks makes it difficult to discern on the iPad mini.

The x axis time values did not immediately make sense to me either but I think I've now figured them out now.

On the iPad Mini the graphing still has some issues.  The axis label font is very small relative to the graph which as I said make the negative sign very difficult to discern.  There are also sometimes long pauses before graphing resumes after hitting the reset button. Other times it resumes right away.  Lastly the y axis labels with low values (open leads) tend to sometimes, and apparently randomly, throw a microvolt value in with the millivolt values.   I have not noticed any of these issues with it running on my iPhone 5s.  Screen shots below.

iPad mini 4 -  microvolt label inserted amongst millivolt labels on y axis

Also - very small axis label fonts - looks fine here on the enlarged posted picture on a computer screen but on the iPad mini screen the fonts are tiny relative to the graph size - especially the negative - sign.

iPad mini - graph reset but no plotting occurring - even after waiting some time.

iPhone 5s.  OK.

This is a feature that was actually tried, but there was a tendency to get lost on the plot if you can pan everywhere.
I would have to do some framing around the visible data but this was also tried and it proved confusing when panning. I also want this but I haven't thought of a great method to avoid the issues. Any ideas?

I can't provide any help on how to make that work from a programming perspective.

It's not an engineering app, and not exactly independent x and y control, but an example of excellent implementation of x and y axis pinch and drag, pan and zoom, etc is the
thinkorswim mobile app.  It's a financial trading platform but it has extensive graphing (charting) features which automatically adjust the x axis values to the appropriate scale of whatever is zoomed or panned on the y axis.   You don't need an account to use the app BTW.

Even though you cannot adjust the y axis independently, because of the way its implemented, it feels like you can.  IOW since the y axis automatically adjusts as you pan and zoom (time wise) on the data of interest, it gives the impression that you have direct control over the y axis.  Not sure if that makes sense - it's something you have to experience.

Awesome i'll have a look at what they did. Cannot Greentree its something that will be implemented but i'll give a go.
They appear to do the same framing auto scaling I did, I'll put it back in the app so you can have a look. Might take a day.

How do I get the app? i searched the app store on my iphone for 121gw and eevblog and nothing came up.

The app is not published yet. But you can fill in the form linked at the top of this thread and request to become a beta tester.

Oh. I did fill out the form awhile ago and nothing happened so I thought I had to do something. Can you maybe put copy on the form that lets the user know what is supposed to happen etc so they aren't in the dark and then posting unnecessarily, like I am here.

I still do have the app and nothing came through via the form. So, what next?

2. The scroll and pinch gestures on the graph area only affect the time axis, not the vertical axis
  - if I pinch or drag in a vertical direction I would like it to affect the vertical graph scale

Yes - this. Especially  2.

This is a feature that was actually tried, but there was a tendency to get lost on the plot if you can pan everywhere.
I would have to do some framing around the visible data but this was also tried and it proved confusing when panning. I also want this but I haven't thought of a great method to avoid the issues. Any ideas?

Yes, I would just add a "home" gesture like a double tap on the graph that resets the frame to a normal view. Then if you get lost on the plot you can just double tap with your finger to auto-scale the graph back to a default layout.

Good idea I will add double tap reset zoom regardless, its a good feature.

You can use the app now if you like, just fill in the form at the top of the page and become a beta tester :)

How do I get the app? i searched the app store on my iphone for 121gw and eevblog and nothing came up.

You should have received an email, I re-sent it. It may have ended up in your spam.

Build 1.2 is ready for testing you should be able to download it from the TestFlight app:

Added:
- iOS 10 support (Fingers crossed that it works...).
- Pinch zoom on both axis
- Double tap to reset view zoom
- Save and Reset buttons continue to show in fullscreen
- Removed reset button from math chart (didn't make sense)
- Added reconnect support, if the Bluetooth connection drops out (you turn multimeter off) it should (fingers crossed) re-connect automatically (might take a few seconds)

Known Issues:
- There is a known issue that I created in this build with bluetooth, if it doesn't display anything on the screen simply turn the multimeter off then on again and enable bluetooth.
- A transient issue also exists for internal debugging reasons, you will need to click refresh before any devices appear on the bluetooth list.
Both issues will be removed for 1.3.

Avaliable NOW!

OK, confirmed it works on iOS 10.

Pinch zoom is better now, it's more intuitive. It's still difficult sometimes to move a zoomed in section of trend to the middle of the view port. I think this is because the scrolling is bounded by the limits of the zoomed out view, so if part of the trend is near the outside border then further scrolling is blocked in that direction.

I think that on a bigger screen some of the text is quite small and needs a scaled font so it doesn't appear so tiny at higher resolutions. Especially applies to < Settings > < Maths > [ 0 ], but the other blue text could also be larger. (See screenshot attached.)

I still wish for a way to pause and resume data acquisition, and a way to adjust the sample interval.

But overall, looking good. I do like the way you can control the meter from the app.

(By the way, in the attached screenshot, I am not sure what the "686.7 m" is for at the lower left corner of the chart? It is not temperature, and it does not appear to be time either.)

A feature suggestion:

When I put the device in landscape orientation I get a full screen meter display. It would be nice to have a full screen graph display also. How about a scroll right gesture to see the graph, and scroll left to see the meter?

This is actually a current feature, if you single press on the screen it will open the graph.

Couple of screenshots from temperature capture on iPad 11.4 iOS.

Noticed that the units on the meter not reflected on the iPad - notice degrees F on meter (a bit hard to see) and degrees C on iPad main display.

The units for the internal meter temp change correctly but the external temp display stays as C on iPad no matter what the meter setting.

 The tap moves between graph display and number well and pinch to zoom works very well I would say.

Ah thankyou, I forgot about Fahrenheit, will be fixed in Build 1.3

A bug:

The device list display can show Bluetooth devices other than the 121GW, for example other iPhones. If you tap on one of these other devices the app gets confused and locks up.

That number is part of the X axis it is the left extreme of the visible values.
If that is the start of the plot that time represents the time between when mode was selected and when the first value was acquired. I might just zero it to avoid confusion.

Is it then 686.7 milliseconds? (See the picture attached to Reply #60 for context.)

Yes, 686.7 milliseconds  :)

At other times I see time values like 0.307 k, which is a very unusual way to indicate time. I think it would be more friendly to format the time values like 5m07s. And I agree with resetting the left end of the time axis to zero.

Its just standard SI notation, I like your suggestion though I will make it display minutes and seconds. Although the log will definitely display seconds, it makes graphing easier.

Progress Update:
- Device filter is now added to Build 1.3, tested and shown functional.
- Looks like we need to add some information to the packet for 1.3, this is for C and F in temperature mode. This means 1.3 for temperature range will require a firmware update.

Just a pedantic usability thing, but I get confused when I see the "Save" button on a live feed of data. What am I saving? Do you actually mean "record"/"start logging"? It seems like the functionality here is very broadly similar to an audio recording application (only in the sense that new data is rolling in all the time, and the user wants to capture that data of a certain range of time). You never open an audio recording application to find a audio level indicator and just a "save" button. You record some data, and then save it; or possibly start recording to disk.

Whenever you see a "save" button, you already have a pre-existing well-established block of data (a document, a recorded audio segment, a PCB file) that saving simply instantaneously copies to disk/flash. If that's not what the button does, it shouldn't be labelled "Save".

But if the secondary display is showing "70.8F" can't you use that "F" to trigger the display of °F on the main display? And use "24.2c" to trigger °C?

No worries regarding the hours thing :)
Unfortunately the secondary display cannot use the F to trigger F as if you open Menu or change what is displayed up there that section of the packet is dropped.

Save saves the data shown on the plot, the established data is the plot data.

But I'll mention again that I find it quite inconvenient that I can't start/stop the acquisition of data. What I'd like to do is be able to set up a test where I start acquisition, run the test, stop acquisition, and then review the data. I'd like to be able to scroll around the graph and zoom in/out without the graph auto-updating underneath me. And I'd like to stop acquisition before hitting Save so that I do not have redundant data tagged on the end of my history.

There needs to be an "About" or settings menu that includes the software version number. I am pretty sure that I woke up at 03:30 this morning after falling asleep watching a new Dave video and having some wine. (It was the late hour and wine not Dave, that did it of course...) and installed the new iOS test version, but I am not certain.

When I send data via email the subject line has the new Date_TIme subject line, but when I use "Save to Files" and use Box.com the file name it text.txt with no Date_Time at all. I think that  "Save to Files" is going to be the method that I want to use so that name fix would be appreciated.

In limited testing it seems that the range (distance between phone and DMM) is better and so is recovery if the connection is lost and there is a re-connect.

Thanks!

Yeah your absolutely correct about the storage Apps, I don't know how to set those filenames yet, they don't seem to allow me to... I've tried a few dozen things there
:(
I'll figure it out eventually, but this proved a pain in the arse.

As for the range, thanks for the feedback :)

I recall I am not the only one to see this problem. See below:

So in portrait, the save and other buttons are there. But, when I push save it kicks me out of the app (whether logging or not).

This is iOS 11.4 on an iPad mini 4.

Does it work on any specific devices you have?

Edit : This can happen when someone clicks Don't Allow when the permissions dialog appears. Not 100% sure thats the cause but it was for some other apps.

Yes, it works fine on my iPhone 6 running iOS 11.4.

I have not seen a permissions dialog pop up.

The only permission the app seems to ask for is "Background App Refresh" and this is enabled.

Build 1.3:
- New firmware tested, working with temperature F and C (instead of just C)
- Build 1.3 now includes support for F and C
- Potential solution to iPad crashing when saving data
- Bluetooth devices now appear without having to click refresh and it doesn't have the stupid code (unstable) that made it work in 1.1.
- Issue that results in BLE sometimes not connecting and requiring multimeter reset resolved
- Zero'd the X axis values based on first sample, will add HH:MM:ss:mmm or something similar but that is a little to many characters for the graph we need something better.

Planned changes for 1.4:
- Improved pinch to zoom, some outliers issues.
- Adding build version in the settings page, might change settings page name to Home as there are not many settings lol
- Graph label for Temperate F still displays C, screen is fixed though.
- Data will be drawn underneath axis labels

Firmware 1.21 is available here, it is required for the C and F update:
https://www.eevblog.com/product/121gw/

Need testing of file saving on iPads.

Available NOW!

With version 1.3 it no longer crashes when saving on my iPad mini. Well done!

Pinch and zoom much better than in 1.0 with good control of x and y axis.  :-+

Bug:   If I tap settings, it puts me back to the connections screen and the app is locked up - completely unresponsive. I need to quit the app and restart.

I was wrong, you can get back to the meter reading by tapping the [ 0 ] on the bottom right.  This is not intuitive at all IMO. You should be able to returm to the meter by tapping in its 121GW listing at the top of the screen.

Also, something other than [ 0 ] as a button on the bottom right would be better.  Perhaps [Return] or [121GW] .

Bug:  Sometimes when pan and zooming on gragh, you get in a mode where the y axis labels and lines disappear and you can no longer see the data. No amount of pinching or dragging, or scrolling brings it back. Tapping reset doesn’t work either.

Did you try a double tap on the graph area? That should reset to the full auto-scaled view.

For the axis labels I don't think fractional seconds are needed. The time axis grid lines should be in round number intervals, so hh:mm:ss should be sufficient (it is only 8 characters and the colons are thin).

Did you try a double tap on the graph area? That should reset to the full auto-scaled view.

Yes, that resets it.

But it still seems like a bug that an axis disappears and pinch/drag stops working and the reset button becomes nonfunctional.

will add HH:MM:ss:mmm or something similar but that is a little to many characters for the graph we need something better.
For the axis labels I don't think fractional seconds are needed. The time axis grid lines should be in round number intervals, so hh:mm:ss should be sufficient (it is only 8 characters and the colons are thin).

I agree. No need for fractional secomds.

The reasons that there are fractions of a second on the X axis are as follows:
  • The range auto-scales to new data, new data arrives in fractions of a second
  • If the range block auto scales (to the next round number) it expands in a jerky manner
  • If I simply truncate the digits, preventing issue 2 then it is inaccurate

There are some things to try but I want to avoid block auto scaling as it is jerky. I also don't want to truncate as it is simply inaccurate.

I think the way to do this is to have a partial grid division on the right hand side of the time axis. For example, suppose there are 4.32 seconds of data. You would have time axis divisions at 0 s, 1 s, 2 s, 3 s and 4 s, and then a partial division 0.32 seconds wide to complete the width. As more data arrives the 4 s grid line would scroll to the left until there are 5 s of data, at which time the 5 s grid line would appear and also start scrolling to the left. At such time as there are let's say 20 s of data, then the grid interval would change from 1 s to 2 s, and the same process would repeat.

I can show a picture of this, maybe, if you do not follow from my description.

Just for clarity, here is an illustration of auto-scaling the time axis with round number time divisions:

I'm getting the frequency cut off in the display when viewing on a iPhone X (Thanks to the notch). Otherwise good so far. To be clear it is displaying, something, I just can't make out all of it.

I know I showed up late for the testing, but better late then never I guess.

I’m assuming you have a cut off for iOS version and hardware? Since Apple has moved to start cleaning the App Store up with only new 64 bit apps being submitted now does this mean your app will support all A7 chip 64 bit to current?
I think this makes the iPhone 5S the first phone, and the iPad Mini 2 (or Retina)the first iPad mini. I’m not sure what hardware for the iPad uses the A7 64 bit processor, maybe the iPad Air? Also sticking with A7 and higher means it has full iOS support still for iOS updates.

Thanks,
Scott

I think I just answered thiswith the video I posted.
What a pain in the @$$ with file type and size limits to get all these pictures up.
I had to crop a lot of those to the wrong resolution, but it was the only way.

Annoyingly I do need the screen shot in the native resolution. If you use something like flickr or a image hosting service i'll be able to get the files. You can also email them to me at eev.davidledger@gmail.com

I’ll zip them and email them. I did keep the original native shots just in case.
Since native shots on the iPad Pro can be 5mg for one screen shot and different emails servers also have size limits I may just share a link to my network storage, or drop box that you can download them from.
I’ll PM the download link to you. Even some photos storage sites change the resultion of pictures sometimes.
Scott

Edit: just remember the iPhone X screen shots is not what we see when using the app.

I think the way to do this is to have a partial grid division on the right hand side of the time axis.

Something like this?  :)

(Obviously it'd move a lot more smoothly and slowly in reality.)

Incidentally, I think it's also important to have an option to display relative vs absolute times. I'm sure there are people out there who are interested in actual absolute timestamps (e.g. Sep 15th, 4:30pm), but most of the time I'm just running a test so I just want (t=0s, t=4.5s), etc. Code that supports both (and the code that generated the animations above) is below. Obviously Octave/MATLAB code isn't directly useful; but it should be easy to translate/adapt.

Code: [Select]
function setup_x_axis(xmin, xsize)
  % Set axes limits of the plot
  axis([0 xsize -1.2 1.2])

  % Choose most readable time units
  if (xsize < 100)
    label = 'time (seconds)';
    divider = 1;
    dateformat = 'HH:MM:SS';
  elseif (xsize < 100 * 60)
    label = 'time (minutes)';
    divider = 60;
    dateformat = 'HH:MM';
  elseif (xsize < 60 * 60 * 40)
    label = 'time (hours)';
    divider = 60 * 60;
    dateformat = 'HH:MM';
  else
    label = 'time (days)';
    divider = 60 * 60 * 24;
    dateformat = 'dd-mmm HH:MM';
  endif
  xsize = xsize / divider;

  % Choose most readable x tick spacing
  best_step_size = 1;
  for candidate = [0.1 0.2 0.5 1 2 5 10 20 50 100]
    if candidate*2 > xsize
      break
    endif
    best_step_size = candidate;
  endfor

  % Place x ticks
  xticks = 0:best_step_size:xsize;

  % Format x tick labels
  xticklabels = char([]);
  if xmin
    xlabel('');

    % Nudge the x ticks to nice round times/dates
    adjustment = ceil(xmin / (best_step_size * divider / 86400)) * (best_step_size * divider / 86400) - xmin;
    xticks = xticks + adjustment / (divider/86400);

    for xtick = xticks
      xticklabels = [xticklabels; datestr(xmin + xtick*divider/86400, dateformat)];
    endfor
  else
    xlabel(label, 'fontsize', 14 );
    for xtick = xticks
      xticklabels = [xticklabels; num2str(xtick)];
    endfor
  endif

  % Apply to the plot
  set(gca, 'xtick', xticks * divider);
  set(gca, 'xticklabel', xticklabels);

endfunction

u = 0:0.01:200;
t = 1.1 .^ u - 1;
x = t;
y = sin(t);

plot(x, y);

recorded = 2;

start_duration = 2; %0.5;
end_duration = 300000;
frame_count = 240 - 25;
durations = logspace(log10(start_duration), log10(end_duration), frame_count);

for indexx = 1:numel(durations)
  setup_x_axis(730736.6514, durations(indexx));

Alright, I don't know who reported this error but it is resolved with another firmware update.

Pre-1.22 firmware the main value was sent to the app via a 16 bit unsigned value.
In frequency measurement on the multimeter it was possible to display 99.993 xHz.
The 16 bits that were allocated in the packet for the 50000 count multimeter wasn't sufficient as 16 bits can represent a maximum of 65535. To resolve this the packet format was revised in a backward compatible way. I.e. future versions of the App will work with old versions of firmware (except for this error condition).

We added 2 extra bits to the packet we can now display 99.999 kHz if needed. This fix will be included in Build 1.4. This fix has been tested and confirmed functional.

Yes that looks good, but I don't think log scale works well with pinch to zoom, would have to be linear, otherwise zooming into the the start of a large data set would be horrid.

??? Where is a log scale mentioned anywhere? The only thing that is log is the animation I did (to show a few seconds and a few days in a single animation consistently), but that has nothing to do with the implementation of the axes ticks and in-app behaviour.

Nono, ignore that. That's just to make the blue curve in the plot look interesting when scaled hugely. Don't look at the blue curve at all if it's confusing you; the behaviour of the tick marks on the axis (which clearly aren't a log scale) is what's actually being demonstrated here. x is time (in seconds), y is voltage. Sorry, didn't expect people to be inspecting that part of the code.

I can modify the code to just have a normal linear sin wave if you want; but again that's nothing to do with the axis behaviour. It'd just look a bit silly because the plot would just be a solid blue block for most of the demonstration.

No worries, thanks for the code it will help. But it will be a few versions before this makes it into the App.

Build 1.4:
1.   Resolved issue where pinch can zoom into infinity (when axis disappeared that’s what happened)
2.   Changed button colours so that the buttons are more visible to avoid confusion where buttons are (didn't shrink buttons as that section will be used for future buttons)
3.   Added support for numbers above 65535 in the Bluetooth packet (you will need firmware 1.22) the packet now has 18 bits for the value.
4.   Added graph support for Fahrenheit
5.   Added build version in settings screen
6.   Added description on settings screen
7.   Removed devices that are already connected from settings screen
8.   Data is now drawn below graph labels
9.   Added 121GW label to the tabs next to the serial number (so it isn't just [ 0 ])
10.   Resolved scaling issue with splash screen
11.   Reset also now resets zoom and data, not just data (It didn’t before)

Planned changes for 1.5:
1.   Remove notch region from app, it will put a black bar there. I will not make use of this space as the app needs to be compatible with other platforms. <- Done
2.   Improve scaling of tab titles
3.   Improve scaling of and button labels <- Done
4.   Merge Bluetooth reconnect fix with version 1.4 <- Done

Planned changes for 1.6:
1.   Further fixes

Planned changes for 1.7:
1.   Rescaling x axis lines with round numbers

Known Issues:
- Bluetooth reconnect will close App, temporary situation haven't merged fix in this build

Newest firmware can be downloaded from https://www.eevblog.com/product/121gw/

Avaliable NOW!

Absolutely, but not much has changed, only the don't care bits have been used (they display as 0 in the document, should be X).

Build 1.5:
2.   Improve scaling of and button labels

 :-+

I like the new buttons. Could these be made available in landscape view as well?

Hold, Mode, Rel and Range buttons are not visible in Landscape on both my iPad Mini and iPhone 5s.

Oh those buttons.
It does kinda screw up the display a little.
This will have to wait until I lock the aspect ratio of the multimeter screen rendering.

Never mind, looks like it was fixed in 1.5. The bug I was talking about was loosing Bluetooth connection, and when the device gets back in range and the app try’s to re-connect again it would crash. It was relatable, but I just tested again with 1.5 and it seems to work fine now.
I was even able to switch between 4 devices just by walking some out of range. 20 times in and out of the garage :scared: I’m getting dizzy.
I checked accrosed the iPod touch, IPad Pro, iPhone 6S, IPad mini 2 and iPhone X, looking good.
iPhone X looks a lot better now also :-)

I don’t allow apps to run in the background, so I found it odd even if the app was closed (minimized/background) it kept the connection. This might not be anything you can change in the app since it’s the Bluetooth that’s keeping the connection. So it might be more of an iOS vs Bluetooth conflict and background app refresh won’t matter in this case. But it was funny to walk one device out of range and watch the other device pick it up. I’m sure that would cause blanks in the logging, and both logs would need to be combined from both devices to see the full story. But I just did this to see how it would handle that situation.

Another random idea for you, you can ignore it or put it on the list of future ideas. I know I’ve thrown a lot at you already. They are just suggestions.
Is it possable to put a little dot in the corner or a Bluetooth icon that changes green for connected, and red for connection lost? Sort of like my mobile gimbals have, a Bluetooth connection status icon. The gimbals change the icon but I find that not to be as visible and usually miss it when it changes. That why I suggested changing the color of the icon between green for good, and red for bad lost connection.

It’s looking good, I’ll do more complete testing after a night of rest.
Thanks for the hard work on this,
Scott

BLE is abit strange in that its not always clear when a connection is still there. No pairing is required with the App, I can however do a timer based system (no data in X seconds), not exactly what was requested though.

That’s not a bad idea, sort of like over lmit. So when no data is being received to plot out it will show some message, just something to let people know they lost connection for one reason or another.
Like I said, it was just a random thought.

Ipad Mini - Model A1432
iOS 9.3.5 (latest version for this model)

This app needs iOS 10 or higher to run.
Apple is moving away from all older devices ad their older 32 bit architecture. The original iPad mini was official discontinued on June 19, 2015. I think this is because it runs the A5 32 bit processor.
The iPad mini 2 is still cheap and runs the A7 64 bit processor and I can confirm it works in this model.

The app description under supported devices also say it needs iOS 10 to run, and part of this is for Bluetooth LE but mostly for 64 bit app support. I don’t think Apple is allowing any new 32 bit apps, and all app updates must be 64 bit now to be added to the App Store for a while now. I think this was announced over a year ago giving developers plenty of time to update the apps.
Apple has been good for supporting old apps and upgrading iOS on older devices for many years, but eventually technology goes to a way that things have to change with new and better hardware to keep up with performance.

I can say I am surprised the 121GW app works just as good on the iPad mini 2 as it does on an iPhone X and iPad Pro 2nd gen. No difference in performance at all.
Compared to testing the mooshie meter that had an app crash every 5 minutes, I have not had this app crash yet. Impressive for the first app release version by the EEVBlog team.
The mooshie meter was returned since it didn’t have an LCD and I couldn’t keep the app running, this made it useless to be running with Bluetooth.

I agree that this app is very impressive for a first time app right out of the gate. Well done David!

FWIW though, I‘ve had no issues with the Mooshimeter app on iphone or ipad. It’s been equally impressive. I’ve had my Mooshimeter since the initial crowdfund and other than some issues with the very first app release years ago, it has worked flawlessly.

Maybe the mooshie meter was cutting the connection then, not the app? I tried 5 different 64 bit latest iOS updated devices with the same results. Same devices I beta tested with the 121GW app. Then I gave up. The videos they have in the site are not even the same app when they show how to use it and demos. Oh well. I have this one now and it will do what I need it to do.
I hope as this grows and the firmware grows (or goes open source completely) the app will see features like the mooshie with the second channel for power factor. Oh wait, they limited that to 50VAC, or did they bring it back? Well if it’s limited I guess it won’t do those things for mains voltage devices like LED lights bulbs.

The only way he will be able to get iOS 10 installed is if someone cobbled together a hacked version and his iPad mini is already jail broken.
The official support is:
iOS 6   Maximum OS:   iOS 9.x*
Details:   *With the exception of a couple of minor photography features, this model is fully supported by the last version of iOS 7. It is fully supported by iOS 8 with the notable exception of "Health" functionality. It is supported by iOS 9, but lacks support for major interface features as well as "Transit" functionality. It is not supported by iOS 10 or subsequent versions of the iOS at all.

But unlike newer Apple devices, some older devices had a hardware vulnerability for jail breaking and doesn’t depend on a signed certificate from apples server. If his modlemhad this hardware vulnerability, I can’t say for sure. I’ve been out of it to long to remember.

That's going to mean the iPhone 4 I sent Dave is going to be useless.  From my investigations, it is only supported up to version 7.1.2.

Sorry about that.

Sorry Ian. Sometimes that sucks. I have an iPhone 4 also. It is the one I didn’t do test in out of all the test devices. In fact I traded in a lot of the older stuff last year to be recycled because of the iOS cutoff. I figured I don’t need them for testing anymore but somehow missed the 4 in the box. I guess I can make it a test for a hot air station?
With the iPod touches it’s a little different, these do not get updates every year. But I think 2 models use the processors high enough to run iOS 10. I know the 6th gen does, I was able to use it for the original FLIR ONE. And I think maybe the 5th gen might be ok, but I’m not 100% sure on that.

I’m still waiting for them to drop the first watch, it’s 4 watches back but they are still updating it despite it being a single core processor/less ram and much slower then the series 1, 2, And 3. The original didn’t have a “series” name to it at all. It was just called the Apple Watch. I wish I could keep it as a collector thing but I know I won’t turn it on and charge it up every few months so the battery will just die. In something that small I’m sure the OLED screen or sapphire will crack when the lithium rechargeable battery swells.

Rechargeable can be good except for storage over years if its not being used. I just had the same realization about my old insulin pump when I put the new one on last year. It won’t last 4 years in a closet for a backup because of the rechargeable battery. It’s sort of dumb, it was replaced under warranty last year from a bad software update that bricked my original one. I’m required to get a new one every 4 years so this still has technically 3 years of life left. They charge the insurance $8K (usd) but because it’s a prescribed item I’m not legally allowed to give it to someone else that needs it. I guess part of that cost covered overnight shipping replacements as a medically needed device. And they don’t have a recycling credit program yet.  :palm: I know some needs it that can’t afford it, but then I would be breaking a federal law,  |O go figure. I wish the FDA would make exceptions for these things like maybe have the pump tested and certified so it can be passed on.
Well it might make a good medical device tear down video?

4S is currently supported to 9.3.5

The one I sent in was a 4, not a 4S.

I could have had a 4S, but I would have had to pay more than I could justify at the time.

My Ipad Mini says it's fully up-to-date at 9.3.5 so I am guessing thats a no for 10.
Don't really want to spend ~£100 for another 2nd hand Ipad Mini.

Seppy, I downloaded the original app onto my iPad 2 some time ago which now has 9.5.3 and won't update anymore obviously. The app runs without the meter but as I don't have my meter yet I haven't tested its functionality.

Will the first version of the app run in 9.3.5 ok?

What do you mean by the first version?
Do you mean 1.7, I don't think it will run on 9 at this time, might add support at some point but its tough for one person to maintain 3 backward compatible versions on 3 platforms simultaneously.

Nowhere on the app to see what version. As I remember it was the first to be made available. It fires up on my iPad and I can see graphs, but as to if it will connect to the meter I don't know yet. Still 2 months before I get home to try it.

That's the iphone app thread, but as I didn't find any other thread, I'll post here my problem with the Android app.

Ok, got the Dave-O-meter just a few days ago, came with latest FW 1-22.
I installed the eevblog app on three different android phones, a Galaxy S3, a J7, and a P9, all with the latest android version, also.

On all phones, the app seems to not working correctly, DMM connects to phone, but then nothing happens, only if I tap on the 121GW folder label, data updates once, maybe some buffering occurs, as more than one data point is transferred
I would expect that data is transferred continuously, as soon as the application starts, so always updating the actual reading on the phone, and also updating the graph.
I also can't zoom or shift the graph, and there are no  setting items available
I append the screenshots, they look different than the iphone app, the status line is missing

export to a file is possible, but is interrupted somewhere in the middle of a line, and afterwards, can't be resumed.
Have to start the application again.

What's wrong, please?

Frank

Frank

I'm unsure this is unseen behavior I suspect related to an android update that I haven't yet encountered.
Just a few things to check:
1. Does the data update every time you press for example HOLD? <- I suspect this will work and it indicates that the way redraw is called is different...
2. Does the phone have any other instances of the App running (this produces undefined behavior)
3. What version of android is on each of those devices?

EDIT: Small change in android caused this build to fail, an update will be posted very soon.
Sorry about that, should have seen that coming...

EDIT: Build 9 is now on the Google Play store, but it might take some time to become available.

1. Nope, did not update on HOLD
2. Nope, have cleared any other application running before.
3. Seems not android version related, have tested with 4.3 and 2x 7.0

Just downloaded Build 9, that was quick.. and it works like a treat!
Thank you very much!

I'm a pain in the neck, I know..  :palm:

The now working android app, build 9, displays the burden voltage incorrectly, the 'milli' sign for '148.9 mV' is missing. The indicator 'b' for burden is also missing.
Maybe that also occurs in the apps for the other platforms.

The first actual need I had to log data on the 121GW revealed a bug in the iOS app.

Meter FW: 1.22
iOS App: Build 1.6

AC Current reading is off on the iOS device by either 100x high or 10x low.

121GW         App            Range
1.0007 mA    100.07 mA    Auto
1.0007 mA    100.07 mA    First manual
1.002  mA    0.1002 mA    Second manual

Alright, do you know if that is a permanent issue or just the first time it samples?
This can be resolved quite quickly, depending.

It happens all the time. It seems like there is some conversion issue that is wrong only for AC current. I could not find a problem with any other mode.

Found the issue, it will be released after I can get my hands on the test devices.
If you curious, there was a rouge 3 in the source. ???

I can't get the Windows app working that's available here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/store/p/eevblog-121gw/9n2681hjrtm8

The 121gw BT pairing seems to be working and "121GW BluetoothLE#......" is displayed in the app - clicking this shows "Connecting..." for a few seconds - but then nothing - just a blank screen.

I'm using windows 10 v1803 and a HP Zbook g2 laptop.

On the Windows 10 app, I recorded a lot of data and then saved to a csv file, which was created OK. However, when I later went back to look at the log file I found it to have zero size and was empty. On a second attempt following the same steps with the same amount of data (about 10 minutes worth), the file was created successfully. So I don't know how to reproduce the problem.

(BTW, maybe this thread could be pinned like the other 121GW threads? I had to scroll down quite a bit to find it.)

Hi, I haven't been able to log the second display, not with the APP or to the SD card (forgot to check in VA mode which really should work)

Is there anything about this or is something that might be added in the future?

Thanks!

I second that, the App and BT functionality is an important part of the 121gw package, perhaps this thread should be pinned trying to keep these specific issues out of the other 121gw threads.

OK, I just reproduced it a second time. I was running the app on Windows 10 and recorded several minutes of data (10 minutes or so). Then I tried to save it to a csv file. On the first attempt it produced a file with zero bytes. However, a second attempt succeeded.

The Bluetooth interface on Windows 10 seems very touchy. I got the meter to pair, but it wouldn't connect for more than a second or two before going back to paired. When the app was launched then most of the time the meter did not show up. When it did show up a connect attempt produced a "Connecting..." message from the app that lasted forever.

In the end I got it to work by rebooting the computer.

This might be a Windows 10 problem. Maybe it is outside your control. Many Bluetooth devices fail to work properly under Windows 10 as a quick Google search will verify.

(I have not seen any connection issues with iOS.)

Yeah very touchy indeed, my Zbook G2 is supposed to be BT 4.0 + LE compliant but as it seems not compliant enough. Disabling the BT in bios and using a cheap BT 4.0 dongle instead the Win 10 App works. Haven't tested it much more though, mainly wanted to check that wasn't a problem with the meter.

It is at least somewhat windows related, some drivers behave very differently.
You shouldn't actually need to pair at all. Might take a while to appear though...
If you didn't pair before try do that (even though it shouldn't be necessary, some drivers treat this slightly differently).

There is a new version of the windows up released, major changes.
There was a dependency that I was waiting for that wouldn't allow an update to be released until it itself was updated.

Looking into this, i the mean time are you able to try the latest update?

It is still processing and might take a day to appear everywhere in the store.

Awesome, I've been testing the file save issue for every 10 minutes for over an hour. No failures, has there been any common factors in the issue?

I can't think of anything special except I may have cleared the history once or twice before collecting the data I wanted to save. Everything looked right about the save operation except the file on disk was empty afterwards.

Did it take a second to save, app freeze for about a second?

How is that iOS update coming? The current version expires in 15 days. I will be traveling in 10 days and may have to take an AC current source with me for testing unless I can test the new version (with the '3' removed) before then.

I will carry the 121GW with me in any case...

Thanks!

OK, I got iOS App v1.7 from the app store and still saw the AC mA problem with firmware 1.22.

Now I have upgraded to firmware 1.26 and I am still seeing the problem.

1.0011 mA on meter reads 100.11 on iOS app
  or
0.983 on meter reads 0.0983 on iOS app

depending on range.

DCA does not have the problem

Do you need further diagnostics on this?

Thanks.

I hope you don't mind bringing this thread from the grave, but it seems to be most appriopriate for my issue:
In Windows app I have Build 65 installed from the Store and while it works, there buttons (graph reset and CSV save) are invisible buttons - is it supposed to be that way?

No it shouldn't be invisible. Its possible you maximised the plot.
Try double click on the graph.

Also, do you have a screenshot?

Since this thread has come back, what is happening with the iOS update? If it is lack of hardware maybe someone in Australia could send an old iDevice to the mailbag (actually maybe not put 'mailbag' on it so that it does not sit on the shelf for too long...).

Another possibility is to use the TestFlight app and have us users do the testing.

Thanks!

Hi Seppy,

Thank you for your answer. To make it easier to communicate, I attach screenshot of app window with example of highlighted, but invisible button.
Can this be due to my W10 theme settings (dark)?

It could be related. The windows theme affects button colours.
Are you able to type the standard windows light theme for comparison?

Hi Seppy,

With W10 theme set to 'Light' buttons are visible (attached screenshot). This shouldn't be hard to fix given the software project files. If needed, I can have a go with fixing this issue.
Also, from usage perspective, I had trouble to switch between DMM screen/plot/combined display form - now I understand that it is controlled by click and window proportion. Is there any brif help/FAQ for the app available?

Best regards,

Its entirely possible I have missed something, but the Win10 app isn't updating if the app isn't in the foreground, even when the app is on a second monitor, if it is not selected it just maintains the last value read when it was the foreground app, then when coming from background to foreground, quickly updates again.

I was unable to find anything so enable background updating, the settings page has nothing but the connection information.

Have I missed something or is this a know issue/non-issue?

Thank you

I purchased a 121GW brand new from the official store in Jan. 2023, and I then downloaded the Meteor app for my iPhone.  It works well enough via Bluetooth communication, but I wanted to compare with the official 121GW iOS app here. Sadly, it says Not Available regardless of whether I am signed in with my Apple ID for the USA or my other Apple ID for Japan.  Is it region locked to Australia (which would be crazy)?  Or is the official app totally dead on iOS for some reason?

The reason I even ask is because I dislike the Meteor app because it lacks a FREEZE/HOLD feature.  When logging data with the app via Bluetooth, I want to be able to tap the iPhone screen or a button in the app to freeze the waveform display so I can better examine it.  If I stop logging, the frustrating Meteor app dims out the waveform display, making it harder to see!  I wanted to download the official 121GW app to see if it works better than Meteor in that regard.  But again, I can't find the iOS official app anywhere now in 2023!
