hello everyone, i have just recently been scammed by a seller at ebay when i bought de-5000 lcr and i am now waiting for my refund to buy de-5000 at ebay again.... to make sure i am not buying from the wrong seller again, would you like to recommend me the best seller at ebay that sells the real de-5000 lcr meter? i know among eevblog members here probably there is also a scammer trying to give me a recommendation too so any real unbiased opinion is really appreciated, thx

The group of sellers from Japan selling the unit from $80 US to the unit+accessories from $100-$120 are legit. I bought mine from one of them and didn't have any issues.
-
Pretty much all the Japanese sellers seem to be legit. Just don't get into deals that seem too good to be true.

Any chance you'd be willing to "name and shame" that seller to help others avoid them in the future?
Also, does anybody know if there is any particular forum rule or etiquette around naming specific Ebay sellers?

I don't think is needed. It's common sense.
You see an Item that retails for 100€ new in most of sellers and then found someone who have a lot of them and they are selling the same item for less that 20€ new. If it's too good to be true it's because it is...
The cheapest I found the DE-5000 was $80 to $110. So less than half off that then it's used, or it's broken, or it's a lucky auction bid or is fake.

It actually isn't useful. There have been waves of scammers on eBay and there will be many more. Ten accounts today, five different ones tomorrow, and a dozen more next week. eBay shuts them down and new ones take their place.
The typical MO (modus operandi) is that it's an account with some history (often hacked) that used to sell unrelated or inexpensive items. When the scam begins, the inventory is loaded up with anywhere from around a hundred to a few thousand items. Over time, you'll even recognize the same items being pumped into scam accounts.
The prices are always lower than legitimate sellers and, recently, would be the same amount regardless of product. (DMM? $20. Welder? $20. 3D printer? $20.) Just look at "Seller's other items" and it becomes very obvious. You'd think they'd put some effort into it, but they're not going to do any extra work if they're already making money.

Yes, correct on both the sources and the legitimate prices. :-+

I purchased this one almost two years ago - it works great.

I bought mine from "akibashipping" on the evil bay 3-4 years ago, no problems.

Fair enough. I didn't realize the scammers had gotten so, erm, "professional". Until I bought that 1660A a week ago, I don't think I'd bought anything on Ebay in 5 or 6 years.
Anyway, it sounds like it's not too hard to avoid the outright "scams" by just applying common sense... I wonder if there's any good heuristics for avoiding more mundane bad experiences, where the seller actually does ship something, and it's close to what was expected, but maybe something's just not quite right. Or is the best advice to just buy whatever, and rely on "buyer protection" to deal with the occasional issue?
-
They also seem to have their own webstore too, may as well avoid that auction place when you can....

For US-based sellers, I avoid purchasing if their feedback is lower than 99.7–99.8% unless the negative feedback seems to have been from an unreasonable or clueless buyer.
For Asia-based sellers, I'll risk down to around 92% because often times negative feedback is due to a language barrier or unreasonable buyer expectations with regard to shipping times.
Generally, you have to read the negative and neutral feedback to get a picture of what your experience might be like if you buy from any particular seller.

In 2016 I got mine from 'japanesiana' on eBay; smooth transaction. Don't know if they are still selling this, however...

i don't think i can trust feedback too because the feedback can also come from scammer's bot...when i got scammed on my very first purchase at ebay i also checked the seller's feedback and it really was so convincing as though it had been made by a real person...
anyway thx for the information everyone, i will try to contact every seller you recommend here and ask if they still have that LCR meter :)

I bought my de-5000 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/DER-EE-DE-5000-High-Accuracy-Handheld-LCR-Meter-with-TL-21-TL-22-NEW/183193624124) from cool.japan (https://www.ebay.com/usr/cool.japan).

Thanks for this link btw. There wasn't much out there about the standalone webstore but I took a chance and I just received my DE-5000 from Akibashipping. I ordered on July 20th, took the 2 week free shipping option. Decent price, just under $120USD with TL-21 and TL-22. Anyway I'm happy, just wanted to let others know of the successful transaction. No affiliation.

Was 4 days between placing an order and receiving a tracking number, the item shipped the next day (so 5 total) before actual shipping for me. The seller sent me an email asking if I was aware of possible duty/import fee's and wanted me to confirm I wanted to proceed. This caused about a 1 day delay because of the time difference. It was nice of the seller to ask, but slightly annoying because I was aware of duty/import when I placed the order and wouldn't have placed it if I didn't want it. Anyway if you look at what the store sells its mostly trinkets so maybe the buyers of those items aren't as aware. The free shipping tracking only worked as far as Japan, once it left there were no updates.

I'm trying to avoid getting hosed or scammed on ebay. I jumped the gun July 2019 and picked up a DE-5004 instead of a DE-5000. I got it from the legitimate seller wonderco_buy and the transaction went well. I try to avoid ebay altogether however today I see a couple new listings for DE-5000 with accessories for $70 USD. Is it safe to say those are likely counterfeit or a scam is waiting for me there? Sorry I was going to link the listing but it seems to have disappeared while I was writing this email.
