Rigol 1054Z - trace no longer centred after firmware update
« on: November 28, 2022, 07:49:42 pm »
I have just upgraded the firmware on my Rigol 1054Z scope from version 04.04.04.03 to 04.05.02.02 04.05.02.00 and have found that after the update, when the scope was restarted, the horizontal trace for channel 1 was no longer in the centre position, but 1 div up at 1V. The trace sits one div above thew channel indicator. The trigger voltage remains at zero volts but moves down to -1V when I adjust the trace to dead centre. All channels display the same initial offset.

Its easy enough to make a manual adjustment, but just wondered whether anyone else had noticed this? Also how do I revert back to the previous firmware version?

Well, it seems that after a Self-Cal and restart, normality seems to have been restored. Is it normal for it to loose its calibration like that after a firmware upgrade? This has not happened during previous firmware updates that I had carried out.

The update you performed included this:

Quote
[History]
-------------
v00.04.05.01.00  2021/06/01
     - Modify the vertical Display.

So it makes sense that a recalibrate might be in order.  Rigol actually doesn't have much in the way of instructions online for updating the 1054Z (at least that I could find).  I don't have a 1054Z anymore, so I don't know if the scope itself gives any indication that you should recalibrate.

The firmware update instructions for the scope that I replaced the 1054z with does specifically say that a self-calibration should be done after the update.

Best practise is to run SelfCal after any firmware update. Period !

You learnt something today.  ;)

No, there was no indication on the scope itself, but now that you point out that snippet from the Release Notes, that probably explains it.

I guess I got away with it thus far, but point noted for future reference. Thanks.

Rigol should at least add a note to the firmware update release notes.

Same as the Rigol firmware update instructions are saying, after a firmware update, run the auto-calibration.
Usually it's also included as a readme file inside the firmware archive:

This documentation is designed to provide guidance to customers on how to
upgrade the MSO/DS1000Z series digital oscilloscope to the version in the
"DS1000Z(ARM)update.rar" file.

The applicable models include DS1XX4Z, DS1XX4Z Plus, DS1XX4Z-S Plus,
MSO1XX4Z and MSO1XX4Z-S.

New versions of firmware are available at the following website.
http://int.rigol.com/Support/SoftDownload/3

[Notices]

    - Before upgrading, please carefully refer to the
"MSO_DS1000Z Release Notes.txt" file to obtain the updated information of
      the firmware version.

    - Please make sure your USB disk can be read correctly. MSO/DS1000Z series
is required to use a USB Flash drive disk with FAT32 format.

    - During the upgrade process, please do not cut off power and pull out the
USB disk, otherwise the instrument will fail to work normally.

    - MSO/DS1000Z series digital oscilloscope does not support the downgrading
      operations.

[Upgrading Procedures]

    1. Copy the upgrade file DS1000ZUpdate.GEL to the root directory of the USB
       disk.

    2. Keep the instrument in the power-on state, then insert the USB disk into
the USB HOST interface (next to the Power key).

    3. A prompt message is automatically displayed on the interface, reminding
you that an upgrade file has been detected and ask you whether to upgrade
it. You can click Ok to start to upgrade.

    4. During the upgrade, the instrument interface will display the current
       upgrade progress.

    5. When the interface displays "Upgrade finished!", restart the instrument.

    6. Check whether the firmware version number has been updated
(press Utility -> System -> System Info).

    7. After upgrading has been completed, perform the self-calibration
operation. Make sure that the instrument has been warmed up or has been
operating for more than 30 minutes before the self-calibration.

        a. Disconnect all input channels;

        b. Press Utility -> Self-Cal, then click Start to perform the
           self-calibration.

        c. It takes about 30 minutes to perform the self-calibration.

        d. After the calibration has been completed, a prompt message will be
displayed on the interface. Then, restart the instrument.

[Troubleshooting]

    - If the instrument failed to read the upgrade file from the USB disk,
please try to replace the USB disk.

    - If the problem still persists, please try to re-download the upgrade file.

    - If the problem still persists after performing the above two operations,
please visit the website int.rigol.com to find contacts in your area.

It's not in the firmware update package here: https://beyondmeasure.rigoltech.com/acton/ct/1579/p-00ac/Bct/-/-/ct75_0/1/daz?sid=TV2%3AQ2jKaGpUj

(the link was taken from https://www.rigolna.com/firmware/)

Now that I'm looking at it a little closer, I see that's v00.04.05.02.00, while @WaveyDipole updated to v00.04.05.02.02.  So I guess there's some other firmware update download site with different (better?) update packages.  It would be nice not to have to go on a snipe hunt to get the latest firmware package.

And here's another fun fact from that firmware update download site:

I decided to see what the update package for the MSO5000 looked like, and it indeed has a readme with the instruction to self-cal after the update.  But look at the name of the file you're offered when you download the  v01.03.00.03 firmware.  I'm pretty sure the .GEL file in the package is really for v01.03.00.03, but having the filename say otherwise isn't exactly the smoothest experience.

I downloaded the firmware from here:

https://www.rigolna.com/firmware/

I think my eyes must be going funny because on inspection this morning, I note that the firmware version, as per the release notes, is actually v00.04.05.02.00  dated 2021/07/24. I have evidently mis-read the 00 at the end as 02.

The archive didn't come with a readme file though, just the .GEL file and the release notes. I was aware that the procedure was to place the GEL file on a FAT formatted USB stick and power up the scope. However, looking back at the archive files for previous releases, e.g. v00.04.04.04.03, this does include a file called 'MSO_DS1000Z Upgrade Instructions.txt' which contains the information shown above, including the instruction to run a Self-Cal, so I should really have been aware that one needs to be performed after every update.

I've noticed different packaging depending on where from it was downloaded.  Some are .zip, some are .rar, some have the readme text with instruction, some don't, some are in English, some are not, and so on, but at least the firmware file is always the same, only the packaging varies, don't know why the packaging is different.

Firmware version can be seen as text inside the firmware update binary (when opened with a hex viewer/editor).

Firmware version can de seen on the oscilloscope display (with all the minor versions included) by quickly pressing the buttons MENU -> MENU -> FORCE -> MENU (on the "TRIGGER" buttons group), then go to info panel by pressing (normally, no quickly required here) the buttons UTILITY -> SYSTEM -> SYSTEM INFO (in the "MENU" buttons group).

I think what actually should have been done - and maybe could still be done - is for Rigol to include 'MSO_DS1000Z Upgrade Instructions.txt' in the firmware update package.  They should definitely make sure it's in any future firmware update package, though I'll be a little surprised if the 1054z gets another update.  It's pretty mature as of now.

Rigol's firmware update release process clearly has some rough edges that would be nice to get cleaned up.  But it's definitely better to have the fixes and improvements over nothing.
