Wavetek 8520 Signal Gen hook up question

So when I first received this I hooked to my scope and the 200Mhz frequency was off 4Mhz. Now looking at the manual I see when they hook it up is shows from Signal Gen to Scope with T fitting in between and 50ohm load. I didn’t hook up with the 50ohm load in middle could this be why I’m not getting correct frequency? Unfortunately I need to order an adapter to hook up that way why I’m asking before I get one.
