Rigol DHO924S proper ground connection?

(1/1)

Hi!

My new Rigol DHO924S arrived these days. With the extra ground lead, since the new scopes are not grounded directly through the power supply anymore. Now I was wondering what actually is required for this ground connection? The manual isn't very specific and searching with Google just reveals a plethora of tips on "how not to blow your scope".

Is it enough to use a ground plug with 1 MOhm resistance for ESD protection, or does it require a low resistance connection to ground? I found different products and am wondering what is the right choice.

Many greetings!
Remo

It has to be a real ground connection, low impedance.

It's there for your safety in case you clip onto a live mains wire then touch one of the exposed BNC connectors.

It doesn't make any difference to the measurements, it's purely a safety thing when working on dangerous voltages. You don't need it if you're working with Arduinos, etc.

Remo,

Since you are in Austria, just buy a Schuko power plug, connect only ground connector (Yelow-green wire, use multistrand soft wire 1,5mm2 or 2.5mm2 wire area) and plug it in a wall Schuko grounded socket... Connect this wire to grounding point on scope. This is exactly how it is done internally for scopes with built in PSU..

Best,
