| Rigol DL3021 DC Load - am I going crazy? |
| (1/1) |
| brabus:
Good morning everyone, I needed to test the current foldback of a simple 12V 8A buck DC-DC I just made. I saw the Rigol DL3021 and presto, I bought it. The CR setting is driving me crazy. The unit can be set to operate in the 15 k \$\Omega\$ or the 15 \$\Omega\$ range, BUT... The minimum resistance in the 15k range is 2 \$\Omega\$ --> too high for me. The maximum voltage in the 15 \$\Omega\$ range is the great majesty of 10 (TEN) volts. No way to set it to 12V, the unit simply says: "The voltage setting value has exceeded the voltage upper limit!". And, for the love of Jesus, DO NOT apply 12V to the load (even when the input is OFF) and play with the CR settings: the OVP message will pop up and STAY THERE, no matter what. You can play with any button, you can phisically disconnect the input, there is no chance: you MUST turn the unit off and on again. Extremely annoying software bug, right there. I read good things about the DL3021, but it's just unable to fit the basic need of testing a trivial 12V DC/DC. Am I doing something wrong? Or have I just bought a solid piece of crap? Thank you. |

Can you use Constant Power mode instead? I don't think many people use CR mode, not that its an excuse. |

--- Quote ---I don't think many people use CR mode --- End quote --- We do... ;) But we use other electronic loads where this is not a problem ( old "Zentro" loads, they only know constant current or constant resistance). |

Confirmed by note 5 on page 5 of the DL3000 series datasheet (https://beyondmeasure.rigoltech.com/acton/attachment/1579/f-0778/1/-/-/-/-/DL3000_DataSheet_EN.pdf) --- Quote ---The input voltage for the low range in CR mode should be smaller than 8 V. --- End quote --- The note refers to the CR mode range on page 3 of the same datasheet. |

I think constant current is what you need. On my Maynuo I would start with cc at 8A, set the knob to .1A per click, and turn the knob until the supply entered rollback. CV & CC are all I ever need (except pulse), haven't found a use for CR or CP yet. The behavior of the Rigol seems wrong, hopefully a bug they fix. Ed |
