Rigol DP832A Software
« on: April 05, 2019, 12:16:48 pm »
Hello,

In Rigol DP832A power supply they have given various interfaces to control the power supply remotely such as,
USB
LAN
GPIB
RS232
through PC software Ultra Sigma.

Are these all interfaces are for sending commands and reading data (Communication with PC)? does all of them do the same function.

If yes, then are these just different ways of interfacing or each of them have any significant difference from one another.

Also, there are two slots one is USB HOST and the other is USB DEVICE whats the use of both, kindly elaborate.

For the most part yes, all the interfaces do the same thing (send command, read data back). There is no GPIB connection.

Host is for USB key connection: screenshots, FW upgrade.
Device is to communicate with the oscilloscope, read data, etc.
Profile -> Modify profile -> Look and Layout ->  Don't show users' signatures

I went through the User guide of DP800A but they havent explained in detail regarding the interfaces.
For instance regarding 4 wire digital I/O interface they have mentioned it is meant for trigger input/output function.

So what does this exactly mean, what is the level of trigger?

any videos , links which would explain the actual functioning of these interfaces.

In my copy of the manual (dated June 2016) the trigger option is covered in some detail on pages 2-37 to 2-40. It says that the Trigger Input voltage is 0-0.8V for logic low and 2.5-3.3V for logic high. Likewise the Trigger Output voltage is said to be 0-0.4V for logic low and 2.6-3.5V for logic high.

As for the LAN, USB, RS232, GPIB interfaces they are all used to operate the supply by issuing SCPI commands. The various commands can be found in the DP800 programming manual.

UltraSigma is sort of an "umbrella application" for various other Rigol sofware(s) specific for each instrument. It can be used to "discover" instruments connected to your PC, be it via GPIB, USB, LAN etc, grab a screenshot, launch the instrument specific software or send SCPI commands to the instrument(s).

UltraSigma does not provide any GUI etc to remotely operate the DP800 as in presenting you with a virtual front panel or anything like that and I don't now if there even IS such a software for the DP800.

There is , it is called Ultrapower. It is basically virtual front panel.

anything anyone came across elaborating regarding the DP832A interfaces functioning.
In order to understand the purpose of each interface.

There's not much else to say that hasn't already been said.

The purpose of the USB Host interface is to allow you to put a thumbdrive in the unit and update the firmware, save and load instrument settings etc. It can also be used to connect the optional USB<->GPIB adapter.
The purpose of the USB Device, RS232, Ethernet and GPIB interfaces are to allow you to programmatically control the instrument. Electrically and physically the interfaces are different (obviously) but the commands you use to control the instrument are the same, whichever interface you choose to use.
The purpose of the digital trigger input(s) is to allow you to remotely control the state of the output(s) with a digital signal.
The purpose of the digital trigger output(s) is to allow the instrument to "put out" a digital signal when a certain event occurs (for example when an output goes into CC mode).

ALL this information IS in the manual and in the programming guide.
When it comes to programming/controlling the instrument remotely over USB, GPIB, RS232 or Ethernet you REALLY need to do a bit of reading on the subjects of VISA and SCPI to understand what it's all about.

Here's the manual.
Here's the programming guide.
