Used Fluke 179 is it worth it?
« on: November 30, 2015, 02:51:44 am »
Got an offer for used Fluke 179 for 155$, so is it worth it? The price is only for the multimeter without any accessories or probes.
Currently where I live the same fluke has a price of 410$ brand new. Don't know if I should pick it up...

Depends on whether it has what you need etc. (do you have more DMMs?). Is it in good shape , no abuse either physical or 'electrical'. If you really want it go for it but if still in 2 minds maybe you dont really need it.
Remember you will need to spend on leads too.

If you're into electronics it's good as a second meter. I'm currently considering to buy one myself (but will probably go for a Brymen). I don't think it's good as the main meter for electronics as it lacks in some areas, e.g. current measurement.

My experience in used equipment in Japan is that they are quite abused, a lot of scratches, dirt, smell cigarette smoke, and so on. I try to avoid used if I can.
Have you checked Rakuten or Yahoo Auction? Best price of new Fluke 179 is about 34000yen (US$277). At Yahoo Actions there is one available with some kind of test leads, asking 14900yen (US$122).

All the Fluke 170 series measure current.  A and mA, but not uA.
