Agilent Infiniium 80000 oscilloscope touchscreen problems
« on: March 31, 2021, 01:18:43 am »
My infiniium 80000 came with a sporadic touchscreen. The mouse cursor would randomly wobble in place and never settle in one spot. I had to unplug the touchscreen usb cable because it made navigation impossible.
I narrowed the problem down to the connector on the 3m touchscreen flex cable. The connector was not properly crimped onto the flex cable at the factory. you can even see part of the connector debris on the 3m tape during final assembly  |O
I added some pressure to the connector and the mouse cursor stabilized. I re-calibrated the touchscreen, but for some reason there is no touch sensitivity within 1/2in of any side of the display. Thus, I can't touch the taskbar or use any window commands or use any context menus. The center part of the touch screen works.

My main question is, how bad is the dso80000 touchscreen? I can't imagine agilent shipped a touchscreen that didn't work towards the edge. Is the calibration any accurate? My finger seems to be a bit off, even if I re-calibrate the touchscreen using a pointer.

If anyone could comment on the usability of the dso80000 touchscreen, I would be super grateful. Thanks!

maybe the problems could be in the flex pins crimping,  the pins may have bad contacts ???

I investigated a bit further, removed the black touch screen border and inspected the cable some more. I applied meager amounts of pressure along the cable to see if the cable was failing at the touch panel or at the cable connector end.
The devil is truly in the details.
Look at what I uncovered cutting back the .1in pitch amp connector.
bugger

The flex cable looks like conductive tape / conductive ink. It has that silver/gray color to the trace.
Anyway I could solder to the trace? I have a feeling it will melt before the solder can wick.
There is enough slack in the cable length that I could probably install another connector, but I don't have a crimping tool to redo the connector.

Edit: This definitely looks like conductive ink deposited on plastic film. I'm going to try out the caig circuitwriter I used in the past. It worked great for about a year fixing the conductive ink touch panel in my fridge. That is a moist environment, so I can understand why that repair failed. I think It'll work well in this case. Wish me luck.

Any repair ideas welcome!  :-+

If you try to solder the flex it will melt, the best solution is to put a new touch surface ....

For repairs you have conductive glue,  or rear defrost line glue repair, copper based glue,  pcb trace repairs pencil  .... any conductive ink or glue ??

I don't see well your touch screen interface board, but it is an usb interface for sure,  maybe finding its hardware device and pid / id's may help find if its a resistive or capacitive touch surface ??

Since it's a microtouch brand,  search for the numbers written on the flex cable,  something will popup ??
