Title: Rigol DS1104Z/DS1074Z
Post by: gnif on October 21, 2013, 09:28:27 am
Hi All,

My first ever DSO arrived today, I ordered a DS1104Z-S from Emona last week! While I am very excited to play with this device, on opening the package it seems that Rigol are trying on the whole bandwidth limited by software trick again.

The DS1104Z is supposed to be a 100MHz scope, the -S meaning it also has a function generator in it. The DS1074 is the 70MHz little brother.

Mine came in a box marked DS1104Z-S, the warranty card has DS1104Z-S on it, and the serial on the card matches the DSO... but, the DSO is labelled DS1074Z 70MHz. Initially I thought they had mixed up the packaging, but the system version information reports that it is a DS1104Z-S.

I am guessing that perhaps Rigol either messed up and flashed the DS1104Z firmware onto the DS1074Z by accident at factory; or, they did not have enough DS1104Z stock and started converting DS1074Z stock by flashing them.

In short, it seems that these two DSOs are the same machine and a firmware mod may turn the 70MHz version into the 100MHz version.

I would not be surprised if the 70MHz and 100MHz versions are only limited by software, but I thought the -S version has a physical button on the front panel (which the non-S version lacks) for the function?

That's weird.

This has the 'Source' button you refer to and is not labelled a '-S' model anywhere. Can clearly see the button on it in the picture on Rigol's website here:

LOL, actually, looking even closer, all those images are the same image, and all of them are DS1104Z.

Hi, I just joined and searched for the Rigol 1104Z posts and then saw your's.
I just received a 1104Z DSO and a 1022 Signal Generator from Emona in Toorak Rd Melbourne.  The price seemed fair and China by mail order was similar.
I noted that in this model the S button was missing and the two Source 1 and Source 2 connections on the back were too.  So the manual is not exactly correct.  I understand that some "in factory" mods are required to make the DSO have a signal generator inside it (which I chose to not have added).
So far (1 hour usage) I am happy with the Rigol machines.  Nice displays and easy interface.
Anyway, I'll be keeping tabs on Dave's forum in case tips on these gadgets turn up.

p.s. I can't figure out what the little springs are for on the probes..

Those are short ground leads for maintaining better signal integrity and reducing noise pickup while taking measurements.

Alan on the forum has a nice video on the topic: Oscilloscope Probe Ground lead length affects on signal quality (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zodpCuxwn_o#)
