Siglent SHS806 trend data file
« on: September 15, 2013, 06:37:27 pm »
I have just bought my first scope the Siglent SHS806, i am very happy with it and enjoying learning how to get the best out of it.

The feature that made me buy this scope was the trend function either on the scope inputs or the meter inputs.

But i would like to import the data to a spread sheet like i can with a waveform (.csv file). Unfortunately for the trend data you are not given a choice and it saves it as a .dav data file.

I've done a bit of research and apparently they can be viewed in a hex editor if you know what you are doing.

Is there a way to convert the .dav file to .csv?

I'm interested to this scope too. I don't konw about this .dav file format, but attach a sample file, maybe someone else...

Ok i will post the .dav file below along with a picture of how it looks on the screen, i just assumed the trend data would be saved as a .csv file. Maybe in a firmware update in the future??

The great thing about the trend capabilities of this scope is that you trend 2 parameters with a choice of 32 measurements on either channel.

I am hoping someone from Siglent on here could describe a way of converting the .dav to .csv

I am thinking to buy the same model, anything to be aware of? (except that unknown extension)

How is the contrast of the display, battery lifetime, multimeter?
Does it have autoset feature for scope, if so is it fast and accurate?

- the first 4 bytes:  undefined data ( a 'magic' number identifying format, various settings of the scope... )
- following 4 bytes: number of samples ( 161 in your file )
- the following records ( 9 bytes each ) contain the data for each point ( all the samples of the first channel then all the samples of the second channel )

Attached a spreadsheet with the extracted data
- column A is the record number that I have added
- columns B-J are extracted from the file, the other column are an incorrect rapresentation of the data )
- columns E-F should contain the amplitude, my incorrect interpretation in L contains some 'bit reversing' as can be seen comparing the lower graph with the snapshot of the scope
- columns G-H contain a non linearly increasing number ( ?? )
- the other 'constant' columns ( C-D and I-J ) contain... ( the settings of the scope for that sample, can the settings change on the fly during recording?? )

Well i am a novice oscilloscope user still learning the little tricks but i will give you my impressions of the unit so far.

The autoset feature takes about 5 seconds (is that long?).

Screen is clear and viewable at all angles, intensity and brightness are adjustable.

I can't really comment on how fast the display is but it seems ok to me. (manual says rise time of =<5.8nS is this good/bad?)

Battery seems ok 7.4V 5000mAh (90mm x 60mm x 15mm) which i thought for 5000mAh was a very small compact battery.

The multimeter has all the functions you would expect, all able to be trended (saved in .dav format)

I would have liked it to have thermocouple measurement though but it does not.

You can save waveforms in .bmp .csv and .dav format

You can save trends in both scope mode and multimeter mode in .dav format (which you can view in the scope)

The SHS806 inputs are not isolated so i have bought a differential probe to measure 230v separately so i can safely measure a low voltage input on the other channel. There is an isolated version SHS1062 which is a closer comparison to the Fluke scopemeters but is much more expensive. My SHS806 was from China via Ebay for £280 The isolated version would have been around about £1000.

I did find a glitch with the menu system where it would not display some of the text in the trend function. But i reset the unit to factory defaults and its been fine since.

It also has a waveform record function where you set your number of frames (max 2500) where it records the waveform at an interval (1mS-1000S) you set. Then play back as almost a short video (but no download or screengrab)

Is there anything else you need to know?

Thanks for producing the csv file for me. I am still trying to get my head around using a hex editor but i can see where you are coming from by comparing your csv with the dav in the hex editor.

You cant change the settings as you record as the scope says you will loose the data if you do. But you can stop and start recording.

If you see the picture of the screen (not possible to save a .bmp of the screen btw) i took with my camera there is 2 cursors red and blue on the far left of the screen. These can be moved to select a point to measure which are displayed at the bottom in red and blue along with time.

Also bottom right of the screen the date and local time is displayed. Are these saved to the file as well?

Another feature I find interesting is the waveform recorder can record directly to usb ( for timebase of 2.5s/div or greater ) this is usefull for long recordings

We will change the DAV file format to CSV file format in the next firmware version.

Any way to increase capacitance to at least 1000uF ??

I have made some measurements of mains voltage using the scope record function for you, please see below.

An improvement if it's possible would be a glitch recorder, only recording on a trigger to capture voltage spikes/dips perhaps?

Btw look at the pics as they show how much recording time is left with the USB stick and internal scope memory (USB stick had 3GB left)
