The new dg5000 series generator has been released.
With a price of $1700 and an upgrade to the latest version for $5500 with options for $1400, it turns out to be an interesting cheap solution ;)

It has the same optional Li-Ion battery holder as the DHO4000 series. 550€ and it comes without... batteries :wtf:
Will they also bring out black edition as with the 800/900 series?

The new dg5000 series generator has been released.

Looks as if they found a way to solve the problem with losing a channel when turning on the frequency counter too  ;)

Hadn't even noticed that the frequency counter was kicked on the bigger brother.

It's just a cheap addition to the dg800-900.
(maximum 7 places...)

It tends to be on an entry signal gen but I definitely prefer it over none, and having an aspect of trend plotting.

Cant recall how far up it would play along, but it's like a few gigs with 6 digits.

Hey @gbix,
I’m new here and just got myself a DG821pro (though I haven’t received it yet). I know it can be unlocked, and you’re the master for this 😎.
I can’t PM you yet, but could you PM me to let me know how to unlock when you have a moment?
Big thanks in advance!
David

For anyone else confused about the upgrade instructions, the button does not say "Upgrade" its says "Renew".

Quote
   3. Start up, click the "Save" button at the lower right corner of the instrument screen,
or press the "Save/Recall" button on the right side of the instrument keyboard board to open the storage interface.
Select the path as "USB Disk (D)", select "AFGUpdate.GEL" in the directory, click the "Update" button in the lower right corner,
the progress bar will appear on the screen, and the instrument will start to upgrade.

We have our winner  :)

I've not hacked this unit, only applied the new FW. It can be coaxed into exceeding the licensed limits, if you set the desired period when in Gated mode, then switch to Continuous mode.

Had to check on mine (enhanced 821 that now thinks it is a 922, not yet upgraded to last fw) because I was curious how high the pulse would go as it is not something I use frequently. Result confused me as the pulse was limited to 50 MHz. After checking the datasheet, 50 MHz is the limit on all 9xx versions.

Thanks,  I managed to get even 200Mhz out of the RG822pro (not hacked either)  :)

I'll invite anyone to "review my paper" but - in so far as I am able to tell using my MSO5000 (opened up to 350Mhz, but able to trigger and display to at least 1Ghz, sampling at 8Gsa/s with dots mode on not vectors), I think it is also reconstructing at the higher sampling rate of the 9xx series too, when set at these frequencies.

How did you manage that?

Go into Burst mode, set the *period* of the waveform as desired, then revert to Continuous mode. The 'elevated'  frequency setting will be held.

However, if you then try to adjust frequency when back in the Continuous output mode, the license limits will be reasserted.

....And another DG821 Pro is a tad confused and now thinks it's a DG922 Pro.

Many thanks to @gbix for making this possible (and in less than 2 minutes no less)!

My dg822pro has grown thanks to gbix, I'm a bit confused if everything is working correctly, here are a few pictures so please give your opinion, it's about the voltage drop at higher frequencies. Thanks Goran
I hope I didn't go too far with the pictures

it's about the voltage drop at higher frequencies.

I think it has been said before that 'unlocking' these instruments is one thing, actually having them calibrated for flatness of frequency response across that extra working range is another. i.e. they aren't calibrated at the factory for higher frequencies than they are licensed for. If so, then that would be a factor.

Also, at those frequencies, I'd be using a 50ohm termination at the scope.

Hello,,

I already reported the output flatness of hacked DG821 Pro
beween 100kHz~200MHz here :
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/rigol-just-launch-its-new-function-generator-dg800pro-900pro/msg5779245/#msg5779245

I measured less than -1dB amplitude drop max.For "uncalibrated" device, it's very good.
(the official DG992 Pro datasheet say +/-1dB flatness for F>100M).

Note that as NE666 say, to check this you must use 50 Ohms end load,
and use a good coax cable is also very important.
Even at 200MHz, some cables will add many drop more !
Of course too, the use scope bandwidth must be much higher than test frequency.
otherwise you add it's own drop.

Frex

I just tried it with 50 ohms, as recommended by NE666, the same thing, it obviously needs calibration, here are a few more pictures where you can see that there is no symmetry between the channels at higher frequencies, maybe someone can solve the calibration, that would be the right thing. The oscilloscope is 200MHz, all in all, it's not bad, at least now I have 200MHz of some kind

Hello,

I’ve just received my DG821Pro and I’d like to unlock the extra options. I saw some mentions that the process is really simple and only takes about 2 minutes.

If anyone has a moment to guide me or share how it’s done, I’d really appreciate it! 😊

Thanks a lot in advance!

David

calibration test of dg821pro.

dg821pro after calibration from 100khz to 200mhz.
the rigol mso5000 was used as a meter.

Thanks,
Andrey.
