[SOLVED] Rigol MSO2302A: Broken images in help system
« on: December 12, 2023, 03:04:41 pm »
Hi everyone!

I was playing around with the "Nth Edge" trigger type on my Rigol MSO2302A
and was not sure about the parameter "Idle Time", even after reading the manual.
So I googled for this parameter and came by a web page that claims:

Quote
The Nth edge trigger works fine, but you need a gap before the first pulse which is larger
than the pulse period. In fact there is a good explanation in the help – press the function
button to set idle time and then press the help button. You’ll see nice help with graphics.

Unfortunately, when I press the [Help] button and then [F4] (with the trigger
menu open), I get a help page with a broken image:

In fact, all images in the help system seem to be broken.

Can anyone reproduce this on their Rigol DS2000(A) or MSO2000(A) scopes?
Or even better, does anyone know a fix for it? :-)

I have a DS2000 with hardware version 2 and firmware 00.03.06.00.00.
All help pages work correctly including the one shown in your post.

Have you tried updating to the latest firmware: (https://www.rigolna.com/firmware/)?

Be sure to follow these instructions when doing firmware updates;

Thank you for your response and the two very helpful links!

I hesitated upgrading the firmware before having a positive
feedback with a specific firmware version.

Just for a bit of redundancy, I'll list the update procedure (from
00.03.05.04.00 to 00.03.06.00.00) I performed, from above links:
  • Pressed power button
  • As soon as all LED were lit, pressed AND let go of the [Help]
    button within 1 second.
  • [Single] button was now lit, nothing else.
  • Inserted USB stick (no partition, FAT32, DS2000Update.GEL in root)
  • [CH1] button flashed during update
  • When update was done, a bunch of LEDs lit up, but no
    LEDs were flashing
  • Removed USB stick
  • Power cycled

My MSO2302A didn't like my 1 GB Kingston USB stick with
1 FAT32 partition, but gladly accepted my 2 GB BASF USB
stick without any partitions, just freshly FAT32 formatted
(mkfs.vfat -F32 /dev/...), with the file "DS2000Update.GEL"
copied to its root folder.

And after the power cycle, the help images were repaired!

Thank you very much for your help! 🥰️

...you haven't got a delayed trigger bug then?

https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/gw-instek-mdo-2302a-delayed-trigger-bug/

There seems to be a common belief that Rigol scopes are buggy, but the mentioned Nth edge trigger bug supposedly was found on a GwInstek...  ;)

Btw, I consider the DS2000A still a very useful instrument, even though meanwhile its "maturity" shines through a bit. Yet, I won't sell mine but rather keep it at our "mechanical" production site so I've always got a decent, reliable scope available there, in case I need it.
