Title: Rigol MSO5000 save to network drive instead of usb stick
Post by: tbavcevic on May 27, 2023, 03:42:42 pm
hi all, googling, duckduckgoing, mojeeking, etc.. does not provide any relevant results.  :-BROKE

simple question, is it possible to save screen captures from scope directly to networked storage by some official rigol software (without pc, from scope to nas directly)?
if not possible can anyone suggest alternative approach. i dont mind running scripts from usb stick but would like stuff saved on different location over network.

there is one solution that should work since scope can print captures over network, print to pdf and save pdf files on network storage.

could not make it work since i am using debian based network storage so must deal with to me very sad "cups" printing system that is absolute time and resource hog with its network implementation that even if it somehow works it stop working randomly and i waste time thinking files are saved while it is all lost. so this is not a solution to me, neither is changing os on server.

have a nice day and thank you on info.

With the newest firmware you can see the scopes reen by vnc viewer. Get the screenshot from there and save to NAS

yes but that is even more steps than saving to usb and connecting usb to bench pc, why would i do that?
and i also have regular software(that ultrascope or whatsitsname) on bench pc that i can easy screenshoot, but i would prefer solution where i press few buttons on scope and have file/photo saved directly to nas even without pc turned on.

to be frank i am puzzled as to why this is not implemented by factory, since printing over usb and network is and ftp is probably used for fetching firmware over internet and there is rudimentary file explorer available.

Would it be possible to setup your NAS as a print server, and print to e.g. pdf or jpg?

Or anywhere in the world when ports are open and with IP knowledge.  ;)

Or just with the web browser virtual screenshot button to your PC download folder....done it from an instrument in Oregon US to NZ and posted the screenshot here.

sadly i cant manage CUPS and frankly after dealing with it for few times dont want to. yea i know everyone uses it and it is working from 50$ to 50k$ printers but i find it highly overcomplicated solution that will inevitably make my life miserable after few updates when it decides it will not work anymore or will randomly not save something that is important.
maybe there is alternative to cups networked pdf printing solution that work on debian based distros but i cant find it.
https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Virtual_PDF_Printer this i have tried but it will not work. also i think it still uses cups in some way even if it is not mentioned in requirements.

also there is problem with csv export that i do not use rn but probably will someday i am not sure how to pipe that to pdf.

should have bought siglent or something else in first place this is certainly upgrade from ds1054z but still has some same quirks that make me want to sell it. it also froze mid bode plotting few days ago...

edit:: i have tried local only mail server with postfix and it does not work and is issue that it needs additional work to translate mail files to pure photos or csv, so that solution is also not satisfactory.

i am wondering is it possible and easier to somehow modify scope firmware to show network drive, or i will now try ssh acess to try to create symlink for this use if root access works.

I've not tried it, but here are some notes someone published about mounting an NFS share with an MSO5074.
https://mensi.ch/blog/articles/playing-around-with-the-rigol-mso5074-part-2

If you mount a share from the NAS in the right place, you might be able to save screenshots to it.  Ideally you'd modify the startup script to try mount it on boot - but be careful no to block the startup script should the network/NAS not be accessible.
