Replacement fan for HP 5326b/5327b counter/DVM?
« on: December 05, 2022, 02:31:00 pm »
I justified this purchase with the logic that I didn't have a standalone frequency counter, I love Nixie tubes, and another DC DVM can never hurt, right?

Anyway, the soft, calming glow of the Nixies is somewhat offset by the loud, grinding, humming fan. Has anybody replaced one of these with a quiet modern fan? What part did you use?

I picked up one of these recently, the fan in mine was also a bit noisy. I tried a bit of switch cleaner in the mechanism and seemed to quieten it down. Might be worth a try.

Probably needs oiling, some of the old manuals recommend how often this was required.
Or might want carefully taking apart, to clean off the old dried out oil first, before adding new oil.

Most of the fans are sleeve based, even with lubrification they will jam,  sometime they are sealed with an rubber bushing / washer under the sticker,

You lift the sticker and the rubber, i put teflon oil "Tufoil"   and extend their life that way,  but if they have runned for a long time and look burned or make a grinding noise, they wont last long even oiled.

You need to find "real" ball bearing ones for longevity
