R&S CMU200 with Arduino GPIB interface?
« on: September 21, 2019, 01:17:47 pm »
Hi,

has anyone suceeded in controlling the CMU200 with a simple Arduino GPIB interface?
like
http://egirland.blogspot.com/2014/02/arduino-uno-as-usb-to-gpib-adapter.html
or the AR488 variant here from eevblog?
This emulates a Prologix interface.
I would like to use it with R&S FreRes.

I have almost no experience with GPIB. Maybe it works only with a Visa Interface?

Any input is welcome.

Chris

The inexpensive USB-GPIB adapter available on Aliexpress works well.

These DIY adapters emulate a Prologix GPIB interface. In your PC's device manager these show up as a serial COM port. You can use it with any tool that supports serial resp. Prologix-compatible interfaces. Like the KE5FX GPIB Toolkit.

These adapters do not work with anything that expects a VISA interface, i.e. a National Instruments or Agilent GPIB card.

They work great if you are just writing your own Python code to control the instrument.  But, yes, if the goal is to use FreRes or other "pure VISA" tools, I don't think it will work.

Hi Michael,

I have bought one of these notorious 82357B USB-GPIB Interfaces.
I can report, that it works.
