Title: R&S FSP Spectrum Analyzer
Post by: cncjerry on January 09, 2020, 10:05:46 pm
Given the last thing I need is another boat anchor, what do you guys think about the R&S FSB?  I have an HP 8568B with the preselector/preamp x 2 plus an 8566B, a 3562a and an Advantest R3131a with tracking generator.  I'm just wondering if I would ever use the FSB once I got done playing with it.

Thanks (hard to turn down T&M equipment especially when it is under $500).

The old saw about needing an oscilloscope to repair an oscilloscope applies to spectrum analyzers too. I'd say go for it if you have room.

I got it home yesterday, bad back and all.  It made it to the staging area in the family room.  Wife loves it there.  I swear my Acura was nose-up all the way home.  It has some interesting features but the butt-ugliest color schemes I've ever seen.  Here it is displaying a modulated trace from my new BP 8904a.  By the way, I love that little 8904 (not so little) for audio work.

One thing I can't figure out on the FSB is the monitor connections on the back.  It has Red, Green, Blue, Comp Video, H Sync Comp Sync, Vsync but I don't think the RGB signals are the standard component connections.  I remember there being an 'RGB' monitor a while back around the time the FSB was made.  Any idea? It has a lot of interface options the HP 8566b doesn't have and I finally got the trace out of it.  You have to read the trace as binary using GPIB and turn off the EOL character.  I've yet to hook a floppy drive to it as it looks like it has a standard floppy connector on the back.  It says you can attach up to three drives.

Anyway, setting aside the back problems, I sort of like the beast.  I have a real problem though, space-wise as between this and the HP 3562a I bought last week, I think I am over my floor loading limit for 6" of concrete in the lab.

One other thing about the FSB is that it is sort of quiet compared to my other analyzers.
