R&S ZVR VNA cant update Firmware and other questions
« on: March 21, 2023, 10:27:53 pm »
Hi,

Ive got an old Rohde&Schwarz ZVR Vector Analyzer (9kHz-4GHz) and want to update to the FW from V2.05 to V3.52.

I followed the update guide an created the five floppy discs.
But if i press System->Setup at my unit, there is no side menu and no Firmware-Update softkey.

I tried to reinstall V2.05, nothing changed.
I searched all submenues, theres no FW-Update option.

Does somebody know another option to update?
Or an answere for my problem? :D

Also did someone tried an USB Floppy emulator for the ZVR or tried to change the loud fan?
Would be nice to save some data on an USB drive instead of floppy.

If someone knows any other "mods" for the ZVR to get it a little bit up to date or that it will survive the next 10 years easily i would be happy to hear about  :)

I don't have a ZVR, but the manual shows a procedure (see page 12 of the pdf) how to update directly under Win NT, without the analyzer firmware. Maybe the firmware on your device is too old to have the update feature.

Also did someone tried an USB Floppy emulator for the ZVR or tried to change the loud fan?

Some people have successfully used floppy emulators with this vintage of R&S equipment. Be careful with changing fans. There is a bunch of them in these units, and they need sufficient airflow to stay comfortably cool.

You can not upgrade a 2.x firmware to 3.x one - the 2.x device works with 486 CPU with OS DOS/RMX , the 3.x with Pentium 233 MMX with WIN NT.4. - but - no need to worry about - IMHO the DOX+RMX works more stable and the WINNT4.0 "Blue screen of death" occures quite often.

I know it's not what you mean, but if you give me the serial number, I can generate the software option keys for you.

Or you can do it yourself: https://github.com/rdelien/fsxx_keygen
The ZVM isn't supported as a machine type, but I know raw key 7 activates option K9 (Virtual Embedding Networks) and key 8 activates option B2(Time Domain). I would really like to have to have the complete list, so I can at it as a machine time, but fuzzy eBay photos are my best material...
