RuiDeng Riden RD6006P DC power supply
« on: February 22, 2021, 11:05:02 pm »
New 5-digit power supply RD6006P is released.
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002185722889.html
https://budgetlightforum.com/node/76643

Compared to RD6006, RD6006P hardware changes a lot though the look same from the front panel,
so RD6006 cannot just be updated to RD6006P just by updating the firmware.

Thread about RD6006, RD6012, RD6018 is here...

I drew a schematic of RD6006P... (Draft)
I drew it without removing the components from the PCB, so there may be for sure there are errors.
If you see anything, let me know, I can double-check certain parts of the circuit, until I assembled the power supply.

If anyone interested...
Using a couple of 100W COB LED as a load,

11.8V 6A

11.2V 3A

10.6V 1A

10.2V 100mA

Using DL24P as a load... it adds some noise and ripple

10V 1A

10V 3A

30V 5A

55V 3A

It looks much better than 6012 that I bought a few weeks ago... Will wait for more review and maybe will change to 6006P...

Got my RD6006P and it looks good so far. It came with V1.38 firmware on it and I miss some of the UniSoft "extras". Also have a RD6018 with the 800 Watt AC power brick and I got the RD600P without an AC adapter, so I use the RD6018 to drive the RD6006P.

The attachments show similar tests done on both power supplies: the reaction time from a short circuit until CC mode cuts in. The horizontal scale is the same: 50 microseconds. The "6P" has similar inrush (due to the short circuit) and settles near 0 Amps before jumping to the CC value of 1 Amp, all within 100 microseconds. The "18" takes around 270 microseconds to settle at the CC value of 6 Amps. The current is measured with a Fluke 80i-110s and shows the "18" peaking at 110 Amps while the "6P" peaks at 34 Amps.

Also did some measurements with OCP and the "18" and "6P" seems to be the same: OCP is done in software and is much slower tripping than CC mode reaction time.

Looks like an impressive piece of hardware!
Can some owner say something about the fan noise? Are the fans temperature controlled? (yes, but on/off or the hotter the faster?)
Three in total can make a lot of noise.

Finally I assembled my RD6006P...

standby power 5V

Added 5V TVS...
I made a serious mistake and applied 12V instead of 5V to the standby power, so this TVS died (short circuit) and saved everything else.

And here you can see how I connected a custom LED (red LED under the ON/OFF button).
And also a power switch control signal.

@UniSoft

This looks very promising! Any measurements on load transients (voltage excursions upon applying a positive and negative load step)?
I'm curious how the linear end stage handles that.

There is a driver you may need to download and install if you're on windows 10 standby,  I'll see which one it is.
OK I just looked this is the one that worked for me to get USB port working.
CH341SER
http://www.wch-ic.com/downloads/CH341SER_EXE.html

In my case my laptop connected no problem but I needed this serial to usb driver installed on the desktop.

Bought a RD6006P and was unable to connect to it via USB. Windows 10 version 21H1 running on x64.
Thank you AaronR (in the main RD6006 thread), installing the driver worked for me. I now see that the driver has loaded for my USB serial device. Hey people, make sure to select the new COM port that gets added. I wish Ruideng would make a note of this driver in their docs so I didn't waste time  |O

EDIT:

I installed the latest UniSoft firmware (1.38.1a). Looks good so far. I really like that I can read the input voltage now (it is larger) and it has an additional digit. Thank you UniSoft for your work!

UniSoft posts his firmwares in the main RD6006P thread. Here is the latest (the 60065 is for the RD6006P). Click on the link to go to his post where the firmware files are attached:

New BETA versions (p)
And new alpha (a) version for RD6006P

How do you install the UniSoft firmware? How do you use the new UI? sunkmail has you covered. Thank you sunkmail (et al.) for your work!

Hi Everyone,

I have been working on a reference document / manual for using the RD60xx series of power supplies loaded with UniSoft's custom firmware.

Three in total can make a lot of noise.

Fan in the back of the case that is sold for the unit is normally off until things get fairly warm, then it switches to low speed, then if the unit gets very hot it switches to high speed. The only way I can get it to high speed is to run it at full power 60V, 6A into my DC load which has a loud fan, and the RD is not very loud in comparison. Of course everything is easy to get to in the case so you can modify it however you like or use a different case / power supply / fan entirely.

Hey, UniSoft, I am working on a device file for the RD6006P for HKJ's wonderful testController PC software:

I have been working on a program that can log from multimeters, electronic loads, power supplies and some other stuff.
[...]

Would you happen to have any information on how the RD6006P differs from the plain old RD6006 when reading and writing via modbus? Ideally I'm looking for a reference like this ( https://github.com/msillano/RD6006-Super-power-supply/blob/master/RD6006_prtotocol_en.pdf ) which is for the plain old RD6006, but for the RD6006P. Thank you.

Flashed with UniSoft's firmware (Thanks for making great stuff!)
Screen seems to show artefacts and is rotated by 90 degrees.

My unit came shipped with V1.39 Firmware (v1.12 bootloader).
Everything is fine after flashing it back to stock v1.39.
Thoughts?

I think they use some new LCD display...
This also explains why they recently released new firmware for all models, and delete old version.
I will check, and fix it in next release.

Great stuff. I will take a look through.
I did a review a while back, but I've not yet found any need for the additional accuracy, though given the price difference it's a no brainer to go for the precision model.

New firmware is here:
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/ruideng-riden-rd6006-dc-power-supply/msg3610426/#msg3610426

Tested out a few things. Seems to work great on mine with the old style LCD. I just changed the home screen layout and noticed the fan icon that comes up when the the fan is running. That is very nice. Thanks again for your work.

Hey, I really like your work, how well does it run with a linear power supply? I have some old audio amp parts, 55V 250VA transformer, 24000uF worth of caps and 25A rectifier. Was thinking about putting them together with the RD6006, but now I learned there is the P model. Costs 30 dollars more though. Is it really worth it?

@Extra - Transfo's can't go above ~46 volts AC so rectified, DC input is ~5 volts under 70v rating of input capacitors.
