SDS1202X-E The External connector usage
Don Warr:
Can't find any data on this models input connector "EXT".... I know what a external trigger is suppose to do... But on this oscilloscope I seem to get a screen trace when I have set triggering to EXT with no or shorted "EXT" input... What type of signal should be applied, Square, Ramp, Circle what???? What should the "EXT" input amplitude be, 100mv , 1V, 10Kv ...?????
Any input into this would be appreciated .... Thanks
noisyee:
The EXT has specification in the datasheet.
--- Quote ---Trigger System
Level
EXT: ±0.6 V (Two channel series)
EXT/5: ±3 V(Two channel series)
Coupling Frequency Response (EXT, Two channel series)
DC: Passes all components of the signal
AC: Blocks DC components and attenuates signals below 20 Hz
LFRJ: Blocks the DC component and attenuates the low-frequency components below 7 kHz
HFRJ: Attenuates the high-frequency components above 160 kHz
Sensitivity
EXT(Two channel series): 200 mVpp DC– 10 MHz; 300 mVpp 10 MHz - BW frequency
EXT/5 (Two-channel series): 1 Vpp DC – 10 MHz; 1.5 Vpp 10 MHz -BW frequency
--- End quote ---
For example, if you want to use EXT for trigger, you should feed at least 200mVpp signal from DC (maybe they mean very very low frequency, not real DC) to 10MHz, or 300mVpp for 10MHz above, for stable trigger. You can feed no more than absolute maximum voltage (forgot where this specs are, should be the same as channel input) into this port, but out side ±0.6V range can not be triggered.
In theory, any waveform is OK, in practice, square wave will have the best trigger performance. The higher the slew rate is, the better.
Don Warr:
Well thank you noisyee for the quick response,,,, But Don't you think that I should NOT see a trace if ext trigger is selected and input is 0v (shorted)..???
Helping others, helps get you into Heaven, lol....

In Auto triggering mode a trace is always visible.
Maybe get to know some of the other Trigger modes and types.
What exactly is your Ext trigger requirement ?
Don Warr:
Well, thank you ALL for the support... Once you said "Auto = trace, -- Normal = no trace" I was able to track down the cause, which was the coax EXE coming out, although shorted at end, was still picking up random noise... This model is vary sensitive...
I will move my Lab to the top of some mountain and everything will be fine... I have had a scope since I was 16 but the digital versions can confuse a 73 year old....
