Seeking Help with Upgrading HP8713C Vector Network Analyzer

(1/1)

shcweb:
I recently bought a used HP8713C from an online marketplace, and when I tried to upgrade it to an HP8714C using the method mentioned in this post https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/enable-those-extra-features-on-your-hp-8714c-network-analyzer/, I ran into some weird issues.
First off, when I opened up the case, I noticed that the bootrom chip inside wasn't the AM28F020 that other posts mentioned. Instead, it turned out to be an AM29F040 chip, which is supposedly used in HP871xE models. I managed to read its contents and followed the cracking steps mentioned in that post. But here's the surprising part – when I powered it back on, the machine displayed as an HP8714ES! And to make matters worse, the measurement functions are all wonky. Anything below 2.6G just shows random noise. I also tried burning someone else's HP8713C bootrom file onto an AM28F020 chip and swapping it in, but it wouldn't boot up properly. That's when I noticed a jumper cap on the board marked with E and C. When I switched it to C, the machine started up, but then it gave me a ROM verification failure message. Is there any way to successfully upgrade this device to an HP8714?
