Anyone come across OWON before?
« on: May 13, 2015, 08:07:17 am »
Hello, it's been a while since I posted on here. Since then I got a new job.

I recently went to an electronics show at the NEC in Birmingham and came across a stand with a bloke who appeared to be operating out of a garage and was selling these OWON products (see attachments - apologies for the crap quality, bloody potato phone camera!).

They do a 7" touch screen 4 channel scope for £200-£300, and they do a 2-channel sig-gen and "field-scope" (Can't recall the prices)

Cos we'd be buying in bulk, the prices came down per unit. I did have a play with the scope and the screen was nice and big with pretty good resolution, but the touch screen was a little flaky, but that could have been my fat hands, and it also seemed a little redundant; most of the function buttons on the side of the screen did the same as the touch and some functions when accessed by the touch screen lead to operations using the user buttons and vice versa. This made it more of a gimmick than a feature.  It had all the things you'd expect from a modern scope! Maths function, cursor's, trace capture and storage, etc, but no USB support (i think) and no serial data trace recognition.

anyway I never hear of them. anyone got one?

ahh,

we are thinking of getting some of the dual channel sig gens to test. If I get some photo's of testing it (spec analysers screen shots), would anyone be interested?

Edit: I meant sig gens not scopes

Mikeselectricstuff did a review here of the handheld unit.

I have one of these too, it's especially handy if you're out and about as the form factor is the best I've seen on a serious scope (it is definitely small). Operationally it's OK as it goes but I wouldn't want to use it in the lab all the time, the UI is just a bit too fiddly, although if you're very space constrained in your work area it might work.

The current almost universally lauded bench scope at your price point is the Rigol DS1054Z, there isn't really anything approaching it for performance and features at this price point.

I think your right about the Lab use Howard, we would be getting them for a teaching lab and I do think a lot of students would find the fiddly UI a bit of an obstacle!

I didn't attend, a friend did, I went to EDS at the Ricoh Arena last October, thought that was pretty dire to be honest, my friend said he didn't think much of it and expected more, I guess the general concensus is the same.  I usually come away disappointed with these shows.

Cheers

Yeh wasn't much to write home about, I was expecting some big companies and suppliers there like RS, Farnell, digikey (kinda hoping for some freebies too) but like you say, was disappointing!
